PlayStation 3 System Software Version 3.41 Update

If you’ve logged into the PlayStation network anytime in the last week you’re well aware of the mandatory firmware update, 3.41.  According to the official PlayStation site, here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:

With prior update 3.40:

  • PlayStation Network area Photo Gallery – browse features from within Facebook and Picasa; share photos from Photo Gallery with your Friends in PlayStation Network.
  • Video Editor and Uploader – edit video saved on your PlayStation and upload it to Facebook or YouTube.
  • Deep Color Output HDMI as an optional display setting.
  • Automatic Download (still only available to PlayStation Plus Members).
  • Default setting for system auto-off has been changed to 2 hours.
  • Print or delete a photo from within Photo Gallery.
  • View Trophy Level by selecting a Friend’s avatar.

New for Version 3.41:

  • Recommended products will now be displayed from within the PlayStation Store and will be derived from various sources of information, as well as purchase history.

How’s about that?  Exciting, huh?  A dream come true?  Maybe not.

I will say that after playing around with this new recommendations feature it is somewhat consistent.  In other words, when I select sports game content to download (say Tiger Woods 11) the “recommendations” stick closely to that game genre.  The same can be said of the video section of the PlayStation Network.  I select episode 1 of Dual Survival and the recommendations for future (or additional downloads) include Deadliest Catch, Man vs Wild and Survivorman.  This consistency is far from 100% accurate and you will find interesting recommendations that will make you scratch your head.

In addition to the “You May Like” feature, Sony has added the ability for gamers to rate products that have been purchased from the PlayStation Store.  The rating scale is based on 5 stars and can only be applied to items that have already been downloaded; and yes, this includes downloads prior to the 3.41 update.

So is 3.41 the update we’ve all been waiting for?  Probably not.  But, if you’re anything like me, I’m always interested in updates and constantly wanting more.  Epic in scale or diminutive in size I’m just happy that Sony is continually striving to make the PlayStation 3 the best console on the market.

But, before I forget, the internal clock functionality that accounts for leap years has also been enhanced.  Now, you can’t tell me that doesn’t just absolutely rock your gaming world.

Enjoy it for what it is because we all know there are better things on the horizon.  It’s only a matter of time.

  • i did indeed scratch my head at some of the results…… i of course looked at recommendations for something Uncharted, so i checked out the recommendations for the Uncharted 2 demo, and got demos for X-Men, Iron Man 2, Vancouver Olympics, Ninja Gaiden, and WET, but I did download the WET demo so I guess It got my to download something

To me, it seems like it just randomly places “You may also like” suggestions.

  • I noticed a Motion Controller Calibration menu option under Accessories (or whatever the menu option's called). Is that new with this firmware update?

I believe the Motion Controller Calibration option is something that was delivered with the 3.40 firmware update; probably for those lucky few that will be getting their hands on Move before everyone else.
