Double Fine Gets Even Finer by Hiring Ron Gilbert

Kotaku announced today that Tim Schafer, the mind behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, has hired Ron Gilbert, of Deathspank fame, to work at Schafer’s Double Fine Productions. This is akin to getting the band back together, as both worked at Lucas Arts in the early 1990s producing some of their most beloved adventure games, including The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge and Day of the Tentacle. After lukewarm reception of Double Fine’s Brutal Legend last holiday season they have recently shifted their production schedule to create four smaller games. All four games are being worked on concurrently with Costume Quest being the first and slated to release at the end of October. Gilbert’s next game will be added to the production queue. Few details have been released on its content other than a quote from Gilbert that “Fans of those old adventure games will like it.” With the recent revival of adventure game franchises like Monkey Island and Sam and Max it will be very interesting to see how the early stars of the genre wade back into the fray.
