Portal 2 Brings Steam Features to PlayStation 3

“We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product,” said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve.

He wasn’t kidding.  Launching in April 2011, Portal 2 will bring Steam functions to the PlayStation 3 version, including cross platform play (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games, persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games, and cross platform chat (PC/Mac and PS3).

In addition to this goodness, those who purchase Portal 2 for the PS3 may unlock a Steam Play (PC & Mac) copy Portal 2 at no additional cost, by linking their PSN and Steam accounts, so you automatically own it across platforms.

It will be very interesting to see how Steam develops on the PlayStation 3.  Will it only apply to Valve games, or will we begin to see game delivery through this service in addition to PSN?

  • This is pretty awesome news. I really hope the Steam funtionalities become more prevelant on PSN. Also hoping Valve would bring over Left 4 Dead/2 over to PS3, too.
