Final Fantasy XIII-2 Teaser Trailer Revealed

Square Enix has just announced and released the first teaser trailer for Final Fantasy XIII-2. This is only the second time in the twenty-plus year history of Final Fantasy that a direct sequel has been made to an entry in the main line of the franchise. The only other game to receive the sequel treatment was Final Fantasy X on PS2. Since it’s a teaser trailer plot information is scanty. However, we do know that Lightning will once again be the main character, but she has undergone some changes. In the trailer she sports a suit of armor and engages in a sword fight with an unknown male figure. The only release information available is that we should have it in our hands “next winter,” presumably that means winter 2011/2012 and it has been announced for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Motomu Toriyama will be directing, with Yoshinori Kitase producing, and Tetsuya Nomura as the lead artist. While the original received mixed reviews Square Enix is planning to “exceed Final Fantasy XIII in every respect” with Final Fantasy XIII-2. Hopefully they can turn the Final Fantasy franchise, and the fate of JRPGs this generation, around with a stellar new entry. Hope springs eternal.

Actually Justin, I too was pissing myself laughing at the strap line.
    Great Stuff!

  • I thought the same. 🙂

    Very clever title.

  • I’ve heard from a couple sources that the FF13 development process produced SO much material since its initial announcement back in 2006 that Square-Enix is trying to salvage a lot of their ideas from the “cutting room floor” and craft them into other games.

Some criticism of the first game was that Square focused on creating an amazingly rich world and only afterward gave consideration to how to squeeze a game of it.

Other “spin-offs” under the greater Fabula Nova Crystallis (FFXIII) umbrella that have already announced or hinted at include Versus (basically, Kingdom Hearts without Disney), Type-O, and… I swear there’s another one or two.

FFX-2 was quite a bit different from FFX, so I think it’s safe to expect XIII-2 to notably deviate from XIII.
