Freddy Krueger vs. Kratos? Only in Mortal Kombat

Coming to the PlayStation Network (and XBOX Live) on August 9th to the beloved Mortal Kombat franchise is a brand new fighter. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios have revealed their fourth downloadable character and it’s none other than Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street films.

PlayStation 3 gamers will now have a chance to fight as the Dream Warrior using his knife gloves to slash up foes. In addition, as the trailer clearly shows, Freddy has a few fatalities that provide nods to the films he stars in.

In a game and genre where voice acting isn’t usually included during the actual gameplay, immediately noticeable is Freddy’s missing voice. This would be bliss if Robert Englund could have provided some voiceovers or even if some of the movie audio could have been utilized. As a result the downloadable character seems like a caricature of Freddy rather than the monster himself. That being said, Freddy should still be a blast to play and seems like a good fit in the brutal Mortal Kombat universe.

  • Clearly Mortal Kombat has the right idea when it comes to DLC, especially when compared to other fighting games’ offerings as of late. This reveal was amazing, granted I would have loved the more classic Freddy but still a great addition to a great game and who knows who they will add next.

  • I am not a MK fan in the least bit. Last one I played with any regularity was the original (massive sprites and all) but the addition to the roster of Kratos AND now Freddy might just be enough to fork out some dough. Especially if the price drops a bit.
