PS3 sales down by 25%, PSP up by 50%

Sony have revealed their first quarter sales and the PlayStation division will have mixed reactions.

The PS3 has seen a dramatic fall but, curiously, PSP sales have gone up tremendously. Here are the key facts:

  • PS3 sales dropped from 2.4million to 1.8million
  • However, software sales for the home console rose by 1.3million to 26.1million
  • PSP consoles saw a 50% increase to 1.8million
  • Software on the portable dropped 28% to 6.6million
  • PS2 hardware sold 200,000 less than last year’s 1.6million
  • Game sales decreased by over 50% to 1.5million
  • Sony’s overall sales (PS, TV, Laptops etc.) came to $9billion, down just shy of 18%

All figures given are year-on-year

Huh.  Those numbers are kinda… iffy.

I figured PS3 sales would go down somewhat, due to “that little incident” in April.  But PSP sales going UP?  Even after the NGP/PS Vita was announced?

Someone at Sony HQ may have forgotten to double-check their figures, or something.  At least it’s good to know that they’re making some inroads against Nintendo on portable gaming.

  • However I think I also saw that the PS3 sales were higher than both the Xbox 360 and the Wii so the headline of this story could have been “PS3 leads console sales”. It all depends on how you want to spin the numbers.

It’s nice to see PSP sales going strong, despite the KIRK (I think that’s what it is called) processor being completely reversed engineered by homebrew devs and hackers. With that, people can sign their homebrew to run on official firmware.

I was listening to the news and they were talking about how Sony sales have slowed. They also showed the Boxs numbers and the Wii (if you can count that as a game console). Their sales drop was much larger than the PS3. So sony has had a dip in sales, just not the drop in sales like the rest of them.

I wish new PS3 titles were not a flat rate of $60 bucks.
    P.S. I hate used games
