Blu-ray Releases: August 16, 2011

A first glance below one might think this week’s Blu-ray releases were dedicated to Sylvester Stallone.   Sure, he may have had his share of early, reputable productions . . . but these are not them.  Nowhere on this list can the original Rocky or Rambo be found.  Honestly, when it comes down to it, it doesn’t really matter.  The Dude has arrived.

Here are some of the releases for Tuesday, August 16, 2011:

  • The Big Lebowski (1998)
  • Priest (2011)
  • Dexter: The Fifth Season (2010)
  • The Conspirator (2011)
  • Jane Eyre (2011)
  • Demolition Man (1993)
  • John Carpenter’s The Ward (2010)
  • Hoodwinked Two: Hood vs Evil (2011)
  • Assassins (1995)
  • Something Borrowed (2011)
  • The Specialist (1994)
  • Cobra (1986)
  • The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984)
  • Muppets from Space (1999)
  • Armed and Dangerous (1986)
  • Hush (1998)
  • Subspecies (1991)
  • Two Can Play That Game (2001)

The week’s selection is an obvious one.  It is Jeff Bridges’ at his absolute best.  It is the truest example that, like a fine wine, this film only gets better with age.  It is The Big Lebowski.

Instead of trying to convince you of this movie’s worth (an exercise in redundancy perhaps), I thought I’d simply serenade you with a handful of the more quotable  . . . um . . . quotes:

  • “That rug really tied the room together.”
  • “Nobody fucks with the Jesus!”
  • “You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don’t wanna know about it, believe me.”

These are just the tip of the iceberg.  Anyone who has seen The Big Lebowski knows that this list could go on and on and on.  Why not share with the rest of us those quotes that will forever have you giggling like you’re seeing it for the first time.

  • Thanks, Bill. I received The Big Lebowski on Blu-Ray over the weekend, but haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. LOVE the packaging on this disc. Sure Blu-Ray owners have had to wait a few years for this one, but Universal did such a nice job with the box and the book that I have to say it was worth the wait. And my favorite line…

“Hey, careful, man, there’s a beverage here!”
