(12-18 December) And In Other News…

Monday 12th:

  • Similarly to the ongoing US tour of the PlayStation Vita, Sony announced four UK locations for the handheld to be showcased. From now until January 18th, Manchester will be playing host; with London, Birmingham and Glasgow joining the party in January and February.
  • Just when you thought it couldn’t break any more sales records, bang goes another. Modern Warfare 3 has made $1billion gross profit. This in only 16 days, meaning they’ve beaten 2009’s 3D spectacular, Avatar, which took 17 days at the box office to hit a billion.

Tuesday 13th:

  • After the reveal of Dirt Showdown, Codemasters confirmed the game is for “thrill-seekers” and that Dirt 4 will definitely see a return to the authentic “hardcore motorsport experience”.
  • Remember two years ago when a few people got really mad about Sony removing the ‘Other OS’ feature on the PS3? Then remember how they set out to sue the pants off of the console manufacturer? Well, the legal proceedings have now finally come to a conclusion, and the case has been…..dismissed. Apparently, the decision mainly came down to the fact that you can still use another OS as long as you don’t upgrade the firmware of your PS3.

Wednesday 14th:

  • Popcap’s brilliant Plants vs. Zombies will be arriving on PlayStation Vita as a launch title.
  • 2011 will definitely be remembered as the year of the hacks, with countless systems breached throughout the year. This week saw yet another – Square Enix’ Japanese and North American members had their personal details compromised, although no credit card details were obtained.

Thursday 15th:

  • Gran Turismo 5 has received update 2.02; including a variety of tweaks such as improved sound effects and the ability to copy settings. The download also grants you ten free car wash, engine overhaul or oil change coupons for your virtual ride.
  • EA lifted the lid on a new DLC pack for NFS: The Run. The ‘Signature’ bundle hasn’t been given a price as of yet, but we do know it includes modified versions of vehicles like the Ford GT and Nissan 370Z.

Friday 16th:

  • According to various reports, the 3G model of the Vita is pushed back to April in Canada.
  • In an interview with UK magazine Edge, Jim Ryan (head of SCEE) said Sony will be targeting the ladies with their new handheld – “that audience is obviously the untapped holy grail”.

Saturday 17th:

  • Google have revealed the most searched for gaming terms of the year and, unsurprisingly, the top two are “Black Ops” and “Call of Duty”. No Sony first-party games were featured in the top 10, whereas there were a few rival exclusives such as “Halo Reach” and “Super Mario” in at 3rd and 4th.
  • A collector’s edition for Street Fighter X Tekken was outed this weekend. The release date is 8th March 2012 and contains everything you’d expect – soundtrack, art book, DLC codes. It’s nice to see publishers putting a lot of thought into these things and not just following generic conventions…

Sunday 18th:

  • Rockstar Games announced a competition where you could have your face in Max Payne 3. If you use the hashtag #MaxPayne3 over the next few weeks, you’re entered into the draw, which will see 8 winners having themselves featured as a character skin in the multiplayer.
