Vita sales numbers outed

A Japanese retail sales tracker, Media Create, has given out all the key numbers on the PlayStation Vita.

Vita released last Saturday in the Land of the Rising Sun, and many in the country were underwhelmed by its performance on shelves. The handheld shifted 325,000 units on the first weekend, out of a total of 500,000 shipped to retailers.

CEO of Media Create, Atsushi Hosokawa, told Andriasang:

“The shipment was abundant, so it seems that there were hardly any reports of inability to buy due to shortages. Regarding sold units, to be honest we would like to have seen it sell a bit more, but you can say that it reached a certain level of success.”

The Japanese-based website also reported that he blamed the low figures on “the lack of a system seller” and “high price point” – as well as, interestingly, the PSP. Sony‘s first portable still sold 65,000 units last weekend.

In terms of how it stacks up against 3DS and PSP‘s first two days, there’s mixed news. Vita more than doubled the PSP‘s opening numbers, but it was behind the 371,000 3DS‘ sold.

On to software sales, Vita currently has an attach rate of around 0.92. This is behind the 0.95 rate in the 3DS‘ first week and the impressive 1.06 for PSP. However, this does NOT account for downloadable titles and I expect a lot of Vita owners will have purchased games via the PSN, compared to that of 3DS owners on the Nintendo E-Shop.

Altogether, physical copies of Vita games came in at around 300,000 combined. Hot Shots Golf (61,412) and Uncharted (48,224) were the top sellers. In comparison to other games released that day, they were well behind Final Fantasy XII-2 on PS3, which sold around 11x more than Drake‘s latest adventure.

Ten of the Vita launch games made the Japanese chart; here are those titles along with their debut positions:

  • Hot Shots Golf 6 – #7
  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss – #8
  • Dynasty Warriors Next – #18
  • Lord of Apocalypse – #19
  • Disgaea 3 Return – #22
  • Ridge Racer – #28
  • Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru – #30
  • Dream Club Zero Portable – #43
  • Katamari Damacy Novita – #44
  • Shinobido 2 – #50

Not sure what to think of the sales.  Hope it does well.  Want it to do well.  My little prediction is if this doesn’t get hacked it will out sell the PSP.  It will crash and burn if it does get hacked and therefor  developers won’t touch it with your ten foot pole.

  • I just hope that the Vita does not get hacked. If it does, the Vita’s life will be over before it even started. That is why the PSP is basically dead now.

I knew that with a ‘Rear Touch Panel’ the VITA would be outed sooner or later.
