Sony: ‘We thought Demon’s Souls was crap’

Shuhei Yoshida – head honcho of Sony Worldwide Studios – has admitted he originally thought Demon’s Souls was “crap”.

Credit to GameInformer, who conducted a candid interview with Yoshida where he admitted Sony made a big error in not publishing the game in the West. The notoriously difficult RPG, which has since had a sequel, was only picked up by Sony in Japan. Demon’s Souls, developed by From Software, was published (albeit in famously low numbers) by Namco Bandai in Europe and Atlus in the US.

Yoshida cited, amongst other reasons, differences in the Eastern development system as to why the decision was made:

“The game development in Japan typically is made horizontally where all assets are made in parallel, so it’s difficult to figure out what the final state of the game is going to be.

The western style game development is typically a vertical slice. So in the very early process, the team tried to create a small piece of the experience that resembles the final product. What happened with Demon’s Souls was until very late in the game’s development, we were not able to play the game through.

There were framerate issues and the network was not up and running. We underestimated the quality of the game and to be honest, the media in Japan did the same.

For my personal experience with Demon’s Souls, when it was close to final I spent close to two hours playing it and after two hours I was still standing at the beginning at the game. I said, ‘This is crap. This is an unbelievably bad game.’ So I put it aside.

Game development is a tough process. We start and stop many games. Some get made to the finish, but we have to make decisions. I hope we won’t make the same mistake again. I should have been more stubborn talking to marketing people here in North America and Europe.”

He also commented on the future of the Demon’s Souls IP:

“We never sell our IPs. Well, I should never say never, but it’s not our business. Our business is to grow our IP and we love Demon’s Souls. From Software is a very important business partner, so we’ll see.”

  • One small error, in the US Demon’s Souls was published by ATLUS’ US subsidiary and I believe it is their best selling game ever.

  • The hell? Screw this guy, because he’s not skilled enough to get past the first 10 minutes of the game, he calls it crap? What a tool.

  • Judging a game after 2 hours of play time is one thing, but missing all the positive reactions on the net is another. I imported the asian version of the game way before it was released in the west and for a few months it was nearly impossible to get hold of a copy because each print run sold out quickly.

  •  One of my favorite games on the PS3. Atlus did a excellent job supporting the game after Sony seemingly dropped the ball in the US, even replaced the guide after it started to discolor and come apart on those that bought the game that came with it.
