Sony Announces LittleBigPlanet Karting

When we heard the rumors a few weeks back, it seemed a bit farfetched.  I mean, everyone knew that ModNation was the LittleBigPlanet of kart racing.  But now it seems like LittleBigPlanet is actually attempting to become the LittleBigPlanet of kart racing.  Friendly competition never hurt anyone, and besides, if this was the first instance of genre competition from first-party developers, then we wouldn’t have Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper on the same console

According to Sony, the game will employ the Play, Create, Share elements of LittleBigPlanet series, and its look and style appears to be very-much in the LBP tradition, what with cardboard cut outs in the environment and sponge tires.

But if you’re thinking that LBP Karting is strictly kart-racing with a LittleBigPlanet theme, then you’d best watch the trailer below.  Karting looks to include an awesome battle mode, and you aren’t just limited to creating racing karts.  The trailer shows hover cars and even tanks.   There even appears to be some side-scrolling platforming stages.

Without a doubt, it appears that they are looking at expanding this well beyond simply racing with your friends.  Check out the video below.

Is ModNation going away as a result?

  • So this is pretty much ModNation with a new skin?

  • Shouldn’t you mention it’s actually being developed by United Front Games, the developers behind ModNationRacers? That’s pretty important information.

  • If this becomes more than MNR with fabric then that is great. But to me, the very notion of this game makes little sense when Sony already have an established brand within the kart-racing genre.
