Euro 2012 only available as FIFA DLC

EA Sports have today announced that UEFA Euro 2012 will be released as a DLC pack for FIFA 12, instead of a standalone title. For the uninitiated, the Euros (or European Championships) is an international competition that, like the World Cup, takes place once every four years. Obviously though, it only features countries in Europe.

The move is pretty shocking to fans of football games, with EA always opting to having a full retail release for every World Cup and European Championship. In fairness though, the games of these summer tournaments are often a test bed for new features which appear in the following FIFA.

For example, the celebration system was trialled in Euro 2008, and the new penalty mechanics in World Cup 2010. This year though, with FIFA 12 still selling strongly, the successful recent launches of FIFA Football Vita and FIFA Street, along with the inevitable FIFA 13; it was probably a wise move in order to avoid the ‘cash cow’ argument.

The price point is relatively enticing at $19.99 / £15.99. EA have set a download date of April 24th in the US and Europe, and April 25th in other territories. The real competition kicks off on June 8th and is being hosted by Poland and Ukraine this year. As is the norm, every UEFA nation will be included to play as, not just the 16 who qualified for the final tournament. Meaning you can take one of the minnows of the continent and lead them through qualification and into the actual competition.
