Capcom releases new details on upcoming titles

Capcom has used it’s annual showcase – Captivate – to unveil a new sequel, give a launch date for it’s biggest game in 2012, and show off a brand new feature in it’s latest stellar fighting game.

The event, which took place in Rome over the past few days, saw the official announcement of Lost Planet 3. Now, at first glance I (like many gamers) simply dismissed it – can anyone on earth actually get excited about yet another run-of-the-mill, 6/10 shooter? However, there might be a few reasons to keep an eye on this one.

Firstly, the game will now be developed by Spark Unlimited, rather than the in-house Capcom team to presided over the previous instalments. A new studio will bring fresh ideas and possibly a more ‘detached’ viewpoint on the other two titles, which could lead to significant changes. Indeed, it has already been mooted that Lost Planet 3 will focus more on a solid narrative than co-op play. Furthermore, the publisher has teased that this will be an open world adventure and a prequel to the first game. Here’s hoping it’ll be an interesting experience.

On to Resi 6; it was confirmed for a release date of October 2nd of this year. This is the third game of 2012 stemming from the franchise, and was provisionally pencilled in for a November 20th launch. Capcom have decided to bring it forward though, most likely to avoid competing with the likes of Call of Duty and Assassins Creed.

The final piece of news regards another cash cow (or rather a blending of two cash cows): Street Fighter X Tekken. It was announced that the upcoming Vita version of the game will feature cross-platform play with the PS3, which is a very positive move indeed. Also, less surprisingly; local multiplayer, touch controls and Near functionality will all be included on SFXT.
