No co-op in ‘The Last of Us’

If you were looking forward to playing Naughty Dog‘s latest PS3 masterpiece with a friend, you’re unfortunately going to be left disappointed. The publisher has confirmed that there will be no co-operative play in the story mode.

In an interview with Gaming Examiner, Naughty Dog did say there’d be multiplayer of some sort – just not the type many were hoping for. It looked to be the perfect game for co-op play, with two main protagonists relying on one another for survival. Alas, it seems the studio behind the Uncharted series have other ideas in place.

Here’s exactly what the game’s creative director had to say:

“We are supporting multiplayer with The Last of Us. We’re not ready to talk about the details of how multiplayer will be implemented, however we can say that it is not co-op within the main campaign.”

The only glimmer of hope for you fans of teamwork is that they do clearly say “main campaign”, rather than the game as a whole. So possibly, The Last of Us will have a separate set of missions for co-op. At the time being though, all we can do is speculate.

  • Hopefully they offer Uncharted-esque type co-op. That would work for me.

If the AI is as good as it looks I think this’ll be fine as a single player only campaign. I kinda feel like Co-Op would ruin it in terms of the main campaign.
