Gamescom: Sony announces ‘Cross-Buy’

In their Gamescom conference just minutes ago, Sony revealed a new feature called Cross-Buy.

Similarly to some PSN games (Motorstorm RC being one of the numerous examples), it will allow gamers to get a free Vita copy of a game along with their PS3 purchase. This time though, we’re talking full retail releases.

To say we’re excited about this is an understatement, because quite frankly, this is a phenomenally good move from Sony. Vita sales will surely pick up in the holiday season this year, thanks in part to ideas such as this. The ability to carry on your full home console experience on the go is what the console manufacturer promised in the run up to Vita’s launch. Now, that’s actually coming to fruition with cloud saving and these free handheld copies of first-party games.

The platform holder said that PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale would be the first game to adopt Cross-Buy, along with the already announced Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. But they didn’t finish there – the previously PS3-only Ratchet & Clank: Q-Force will now be available on the portable too, as part of Cross-Buy.

We can only hope that third-party publishers such as EA will also begin to implement Cross-Buy in the near future.

  • Is this for titles purchased from PSN or for titles purchased through Amazon and others as ?

    • It’s for both retail and download. Even if you buy the retail disc PS3 version though, the Vita game will come in the form of a code, not a game card.
