PS4 is “first and foremost a video game console”

Kaz Hirai has given PlayStation fans the news they wanted to hear – the PS4 is all about the gaming.

Presumably in response to Microsoft‘s new all-in-one entertainment system, Xbox One, the Sony boss is keen to state what the PS4‘s primary purpose is. The new Xbox has undergone widespread criticism from ‘hardcore gamers’ due to its focus on TV rather than gaming.

Speaking at yesterday’s D11 conference, Hirai spoke of PlayStation‘s main concentration:

“The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers.

If we miss that part, I don’t think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3.

Providing other non-game content is an area we will reveal and talk about in the coming months, but this is first and foremost as a game console.”

Hahahaha. Microsoft really stuffed up their messaging – “Our console does TV, you know, that thing you used to watch when you were little’. Fail whale.

In Australia (being where I am) this TV stuff is completely useless. We don’t have the cable TV infrastructure and Netflix doesn’t even exist. Pretty sure my TV already has TV shows on it as well.

So Sony, I can play games on my Game console? That sounds a lot better. KAZ ROCKS!
