PlayStation 3, Keeping it or Ditching it?

ps3-keeping-or-ditching

Let me start by saying that I know not everyone can keep their PlayStation 3 due to financial reasons, but here’s why I’ll be keeping my PS3.

The Apps
Even if this console could not play any games it is still an awesome system for apps. Being able to use this device just as a Blu-ray player or even just a Netflix only device is awesome. You can hardwire this to your modem for a great connection or it’s WiFi ready. It would make an awesome addition to a basement where you cannot run cable to, or a kid’s room to limit what they are watching. The PS3 will turn any TV into a smart TV. Also do not forget all the other apps like Amazon, YouTube, NHL, MLB and Hulu just to name a few. I can tell you that my PS3 will be going into my bedroom where I cannot run cable, where my wife and I will be able to enjoy Netflix from the comfort of our bed.

The Games (Digital and Physical)
With or without PlayStation Plus (if you do not have PS Plus I think you’re crazy, but we will talk about that later on) there are plenty of games that I am sure you or I have not played. There are some games that will be only on the PlayStation 3 Store (at least for now) and you won’t be able to play these games anywhere else. With close to 70 million PS3 consoles sold over the last seven years, I Feel that there will still be some Third Party developers making games over the next few years. Sony did commit to support the PS3 for ten years like they did the PS2.  If you are anything like me, you have a pretty extensive back log of games you own that need to be played and then there’s the list of games you want to buy, but do not because of the above mentioned list.

Unannounced Games
This is all speculation by me but I feel that Sony has maybe 6-12 games that they have not revealed yet because Sony is laser focused on the PS4 from now thru the holidays.  Do not get me wrong, there are plenty of games coming out between now and this holiday to play on PlayStation 3: Beyond: Two Souls, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus, but I still feel there will be more that we do not know about. Remember, God Of War II came to PS2 after the PS3 launched.

Resale Value
How much could you really get for the Console via trade or private sale?  As we get closer and closer to the November 15th release of PlayStation 4, the value for the system will continue to decline.  Heck you can now buy a brand new PS3 for $199.99. Granted it has a tiny hard drive, but it’s still $199.99 for a brand new console without the risk of a used system crashing or something breaking.

PlayStation Plus
Like I mentioned before if you do not have this service I think you’re crazy. One of the best values in gaming, The Instant Game Collection, Cloud Storage, discounts and auto-updates all are great features. Also the fact that you will not have to buy PS Plus separately for the PS4 makes this an amazing service. For $50 a year you get all the above mentioned features for your PS3, PS Vita and your PS4. I also feel that the Instant Game Collection will continue to get better on the PS3 after the release of the PS4.

So let me know your thoughts. Are you keeping your PS3? Selling it? Keeping it because you’re a collector? Let’s talk about it in the comments and on the Forums.

I have so many physical PS3 games that I have to keep my PS3. I doubt Sony will ever find a way for me to use my PS3 discs on PS4 through streaming. So I’ll keep my PS3.

  • Ramen_4_Life

Thanks to Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Crunchyroll, etc., my PS3 has been the best reason NOT to get service from cable or satellite. Definitely a keeper.

I’m keeping my PS3, not only for the added value of PS+ but so my fiancee can watch Netflix while i play my PS4 games on my Vita 🙂

  • Joey McPherson

I’m keeping mine. I’ll have the PS3 in one room and the PS4 in another room. Perfect living conditions 🙂

  • MnemonicDK

I’m keeping it – In fact, I just ordered another PS3 for my home office today…

  • Jahonius

I’m really jealous that my fellow American PlayStationers get video streaming services, as they are unavailable for me in Korea. So, the only reason that I’m keeping my PS3 is for games. Not just for unannounced gems, but quality games that are a bit old at bargained prices.

Funny though, I read an article a while ago about how games consoles are hogging up electricity – not that I care much, but some people do, right?

    • David Hunt

Never heard of the console hurting electric bills. Have not seen that on any energy saving tips either

Got to keep for my plus games and use it as a media streamer for my plex server 🙂
    Thanks

gt6 alone is making me keep mine. Not to mention all the great ps3 exclusive games I have hard copies of.

  • Dan Thorpe

I am keeping it simply for the fact I have a pile of games they I still have not beat.

  • I have more than 40 games unfinished for it… I’m getting them in faster than I can finish them.

So, keeping it. Actually, I’ll probably pick up a super-slim sometime here and give the current PS3 to my 5 year old for bluray watching.

  • Keeping my PS3. After i get my PS4 and playthrough Knack i will hold off on buying new PS4 games for I can complete my backlog on PS3. With all the free-to-play games coming to PS4 and PlayStation Plus i don’t think i will have a shortage of games.

If you can’t afford to get a PS4 without ditching the PS3, how can you afford a PS4 and all new games accessories etc and not free, cheap, reduced cost games on the PS3?

  • wv06

Mine is starting to freeze up and I just ordered a new model 500gb on ebay. I will take advantage of people ditching theirs and pick up some spares. I still have probably 25 ps3 games to finish

  • JonButler89

I will be keeping my PS3 and moving it upstairs to my bedroom. Mainly because I would like to keep it as a collection and some of the collectors edition games I have purchased in this past year of having a PlayStation 3
