Today at their Digital Days event Ubisoft unveiled a new side-scrolling game set during The Great War (WWI), Valiant Hearts: The Great War, set to release in 2014 to all current and next-gen systems.

The new title is being developed using Ubisoft’s engine UbiArt Framework that has been used in Rayman Legends and is being developed by Ubisoft Montpelier. The larger-than-life look to the characters is used in order to provide a very obvious, light-hearted difference from the tragic story elements that will be covered in the game. The game’s story has been created using various forms of inspiration including letters written during WWI, even some letters written by the great-grandfather of someone on the development team.

Valiant Hearts tells the story of five characters that takes place during a small time period of the first world war, between 1914 and 1918. Freddie, an American soldier fighting in honor of his fallen wife. Emile, who becomes a prisoner of war while looking for his son-in-law. Karl, a German soldier who is in love with Emile’s daughter. Ana, a field medic. George, a British pilot who doesn’t really know how to fly a plane. This group of characters is also joined by a dog who plays key roles in each of the character’s story and helps them along their journey.

As mentioned earlier, Valiant Hearts is a 2D side-scrolling game that will put each character up against different puzzles throughout their journey. The puzzles change with each characters, offering different challenges each time.
