Your 2013 Golden Minecart Awards Winners

One of the best years in gaming history has drawn to a close and your votes have been heard. A write-in even made an early run in one of the categories but ultimately fell short.

Each of the winners is listed here along with some information about the votes. For the audio of the full awards show along with acceptance speeches from many of the winners, please check out Episode 356 of the Podcast.

Without further ado, here are your nominees with winners and voting percentages listed for the top three in each category.

Two write-in votes jumped ahead of one of the nominees here leaving a single vote separating each of third, fourth, fifth and sixth places, but in the end, Soul Sacrifice took the Golden Minecart handily.

Best Cross-Buy (PS Vita) Nominees/Winner:
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time – 44%
Guacamelee – 38%
Flower – 8%

Lone Survivor: The Director’s Cut

Sly Cooper and Guacamelee really battled it out here and it was close through the whole voting process but Guacamelee just didn’t get that last push to catch the slick Raccoon.

Guacamelee – 21%

MediaMolecule’s latest and greatest has been hailed as possibly the best game on the PS Vita and a great many of you agreed. Easily the most charming game on the system, it lives up to the LittleBigPlanet legacy of whimsy.

Game of the Year (PS Vita) Nominees/Winner:
Tearaway – 40%
Killzone: Mercenary – 27%
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time – 10%
The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season
Hotline Miami

And Tearaway does it again. In a category filled with what appeared to be stiff competition in the form of Killzone: Mercenary and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Iota and Atoi ran away with the trophy after capturing the hearts our our voters.

Best Sports Game (PS3/PSN) Nominees/Winner:
MLB 13: The Show – 42%
FIFA 14 – 19%
NBA 2K14 – 17%
NHL 14
WWE 2K14

Four straight years of dominance as the MLB series continues its reign with our voters. Will anyone be able to knock them off in years to come? Will the dominance continue into the next generation? We’ll have to wait and see.

Best Fighting Game (PS3/PSN) Nominees/Winner:
Injustice: Gods Among Us – 68%
Divekick – 14%
Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate – 8%
Soul Calibur II HD Online
Darkstalkers Resurrection

While this wasn’t the strongest year for fighting games, you clearly felt that Injustice: Gods Among Us was far and away the best available. This was one of the biggest margins of victory in the 2013 awards.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch – 68%
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen – 10%
Tales of Xillia – 7%
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Dragon Fantasy: Book II

Did anyone really stand a chance here? Level-5 and Studio Ghibli, a combination to make geeks salivate, and our voters slobbered all over this charming RPG.

Best Racing Game (PS3/PSN) Nominees/Winner:
Gran Turismo 6 – 65%
Need For Speed: Rivals – 24%
Grid 2 – 6%
F1 2013 (Tie for 4th)
Fast & Furious Showdown (Tie for 4th)

Improving on just about everything in Gran Turismo 5, GT6 cruised to a first place finish after a mid-December release that left it off of many other sites considerations.

Best HD Remake (PS3/PSN) Nominees/Winner:
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX – 39%
Duck Tales – 26%
Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational – 11%
Hitman Trilogy HD
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse

Disney and Square-Enix, another winning combination and a beautiful upgrade to some true PS2 classics. While First and Second place were relatively close, only Four votes total separated Third through Fifth. This was obviously one of the more difficult decisions for people across the board.

Incredibly tough competition here, with some amazing new IP’s being released on the PSN this year, but Guacamelee pulled out a solid win.

In another category full of very strong contenders, our voters spoke emphatically with The Last of Us absolutely crushing every other nominated game.

Best Multiplayer (PS3/PSN) Nominees/Winner:
Grand Theft Auto V – 37%
Battlefield 4 – 26%
The Last of Us (Write-In) 10%
Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag
God of War: Ascension

This one turned out to be a horse race between Grand Theft Auto V and Battlefield 4. The Last of Us made a surprising run with the write-in votes having been left off of the ballot but the freedom and mayhem of Grand Theft Auto V won out in the end.

Most Unique Experience (PS3/PSN) Nominees/Winner:
The Last of Us – 45%
Puppeteer – 30%
Beyond: Two Souls – 16%
Rain
Stick It to the Man

Another win for The Last of Us but this one was much closer with Puppeteer really making a run for first place.

Best Action/Adventure Game (PS3/PSN) Nominees/Winner:
Grand Theft Auto V – 34%
Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag – 22%
BioShock Infinite – 20%
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
God of War: Ascension

This was a close vote from First to Third with some great games nominated and just a handful of votes separating Second and Third place but Grand Theft Auto V once again pulled out the win.

So finally our two heavyweights go head to head and The Last of Us again dominates pulling off the hat trick. In an incredible year for gaming and storytelling, our voters were simply overwhelmed by the story of Joel and Ellie.

Best Launch Title (PS4) Nominees/Winner:
Killzone: Shadow Fall – 32%
Resogun – 28%
Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag – 23%

A very tight competition between our top three contenders with each of them deserving the win on their own merits, our voters however gave the nod to the gorgeous new chapter in the long running Killzone franchise.

Best Newcomer (New IP: PS4) Nominees/Winner:
Resogun – 66%
Knack – 22%
Warframe – 4%

This one was almost a given. Resogun is pure eye candy and another home run from the people at Housemarque. Our voters gave the game a resounding victory.

Game of the Month and a Half (PS4) Nominees/Winner:
Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag – 27%
Killzone: Shadow Fall – 25%
Resogun – 25%
Battlefield 4
NBA 2K14

Easily the most hotly contested award we’ve ever seen, there was a virtual tie going into the last few hours of the voting here and it ended with eight votes total separating First to Third place. The pirates won out however and Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag takes home our final trophy this year.

    Just a little FYI, after listening to the related podcast, NFS Most Wanted was 2012 on PS3 (2013 for WiiU) and thus the racing list is correct with only NFS Rivals :)
