Here is what is new with this model:

  • 20% slimmer
  • 15% lighter.

The new PlayStation Vita model will be bundled with Borderlands 2, its six pieces of DLC, and an 8GB memory card for $199 and is expected to hit stores later this year.

Just a nerd from the Windy City. I’m actually really bad at describing myself because I get all self-critical and self-conscious. Follow me on Twitter, @The1stMJC, to see my borderline insane rants on tv shows and other non important subjects. If I’m not tweeting I’m probably just watching Buffy or Firefly for the millionth time.

  • It’s funny when you see big sites say “breaking news” over this. Was this not expected?

The sales of the new Vitas are surprisingly doing so well where I live, Korea, that the 1005 (the first gen) Vitas are ironically sold at lower price tag (as much as 20~30 dollars less). I see this as an opportunity for those who still don’t own one.

The 1st gen Vitas are great because, they are cheaper (depends on your retailer) and the OLED screen on a handheld device is so much appreciable over the 2nd ten Vitas. But if you are in the market for something lighter, easier access (micro USB ports instead of the Sony proprietary USB ports), and wider choice of colors, go for the new one.

I wonder if the switch from OLED to LCD is going to impact gameplay in any significant way?

Especially for atmospheric titles. Hmmm. I guess the Vita T.V. has the same concerns and no one is complaining about that. They are just complaining they can’t play anything on it! XD

According ti my observation, where I swapped my 1st gen vita with my friend’s 2nd gen for a week, The difference is very noticeable at first. The LCD is dimmer but for some high end graphics games like Killzone and Uncharted, it weirdly looks better.
It is only a matter of getting used to really. But once you have seen the OLED, it is damn hard personally to go back to LCD
