What would you pay for the Sony VR Headset

The Sony VR Headset known as “Project Morpheus” was finally announced by Sony at the Game Developers Conference (GDC). They told us a lot of information, gave us some specifications* and some lucky people at GDC even get to try it out, listen out for impressions from Glenn and Josh on the podcast and site soon. If you missed the announcement check it out here.

Shuhei Yoshida – President of Worldwide Studios has this to say about the device:

Our current prototype for Project Morpheus features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation®Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time. Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation. In addition to PlayStation Camera, Project Morpheus works with DUALSHOCK®4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation®Move to deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play VR experience.

Now here is where I need your help, I ask that you vote on a price point that you’d be willing to pay for just the VR Headset System alone, not a bundle with the PS4 Camera and Move Controller which I’m sure we will also see.

What do you think of the device? Let us know in the comments below.

$250 is reasonable, particularly in-line with Sony Audio-only headsets. More than that is a deal-breaker for me. ALSO they won’t support the damn thing for more than ONE year anyway…..if past is prologue.

I agree. $249 seems reasonable. Still, the device is so niche that I doubt it’ll sell

  • I would pay $100 for it and nothing more. I see this going as far as 3D and PS Move. Sony supports it for about a year then moves on and doesn’t care about it anymore.

At least it uses the Move controller. 🙂

      • Now we just need the games that use Move on PS4.

$249 sounds fair. I like the idea, can they make the games to support it long term. I liked the move but there wasn’t big support from the game developers. And now it gathers dust like that other game system with the plumbers.

$249 would be perfect. I would go up to $399 depending what games they market it with.

  • I would actually say $300 ($350 CAD) is very reasonable. There is no way Oculus will be selling their unit below $300 (current dev unit is $350, by the way) after all the money they raised. Plus, where is the VR competition in the console space? Microsoft is doing Augmented Reality, Oculus has ruled out console support and I hardly doubt the indie VR companies will get a lot of development support. Had there been a justifiable competition for Sony, $250 would be better for consumers. I just hope VR isn’t just a fad like Nintendo’s Wii. I really hope that someday it can maybe replace the traditional console gaming experience.

I think it will replace the console eventually but we’re still a timey wimey day away, and without competition on the horizon I’d expect it to cost as much if not more than a ps4 and not a reasonable price like $250 which would be nice .
