Jonathan Blow, Founder of Thekla, Inc., and the mind behind the PlayStation 4 game The Witness has taken to the PlayStation Blog to show some new information on the highly anticipated puzzler; two of them being that the game will run at 1080p and 60fps when it ships.

“Right now we meet this target in many areas of the game, but not everywhere.” Mr. Blow said. “But with more old-fashioned hard work we should be.”

Though many details were given on the game throughout his post, he didn’t give a window for release, just saying, “We don’t know the release date yet; it is still officially “when it’s done”, but these days “when it’s done” is getting closer and closer.”

The Witness is a massive, open-world puzzle game that allows you to walk around the island at your own leisure. Mr. Blow went into what him and his team have done to make gameplay in such a big world smooth and enjoyable;

“…making sure that it doesn’t take too long to stream in new parts of the world as you move.” He continues, “When we do stream in higher-detail versions of far-away geometry, we don’t want the graphics to pop, so we’ve recently implemented a smooth blend between LOD levels. The Witness is an open-world game with no loading screens; the feeling of just walking around and looking at things is very important. We work hard to make this happen as smoothly as possible.”

While the graphics and puzzle mechanics are major parts of making The Witness into the game that Thekla, Inc. wants it to be; the audio is just as important, if not more. “Since the game is so much about a sense of place, the audio design is crucial. Right now there are 1.2 gigabytes of sound (much of it compressed!) in the game, which represents over 40% the game’s data.”

To give everyone a sense of just how much audio is in the game, Mr. Blow also gave this little breakdown of the size of the game so far:

  • Texture Maps: 1196 files, 446MB
  • Meshes: 4588 files, 507MB
  • Sounds: 2435 files, 1.2GB
  • Animations: 197 files, 0.6MB
  • Entities: 1 file, 4.3MB
  • Lightmaps (these are auto-generated): 17916 files, 453MB

Total size, which also includes files not listed above: 2.7GB (39,387 files)

Mr. Blow finished by giving us a sense that the game is getting really close to be done, and we’ll hear more about it soon. “we are now in the downhill stretch of the race and looking forward to tying the game up completely. We’ll have more updates for you before too long!”

Are you looking forward to diving into the world of The Witness? We’re just a couple of weeks away from E3 2014, so be on the look out for more The Witness news.

    I’m so tired of hearing about this game. I just want to play it and see if it lives up too the hype.
