E3 2014: What We’re Hoping to See (Part One)

The countdown to E3 is in full swing and everyone at PS Nation is getting ready for the information deluge that spills out of the press conferences and during the Electronic Entertainment Expo itself. I grabbed as many colleagues as I could and asked them what they are ‘Hoping to See at E3.’ Afterwards why not let us know what you are hoping to see during E3 in the comments section at the bottom of the article.

DamonI am looking forward to seeing what EA has in store for the PS4. I want to know and see more about the new Star Wars Battlefront game as well as Visceral’s Star Wars game. I am also curious to see their NBA game now that they have another year under their belts. I’m wondering if EA will bring back any of their old games like NBA/NFL Street or NBA Jam as arcade games.

I am also looking forward to seeing the next new IP for Sony’s systems. It doesn’t matter to me if it is AAA or Indie or somewhere in-between. I just want to see something new and not a continuation of something I have had before. Contrast was one of the games I was most excited about for the PS4 because it was different than most of the other launch titles. What’s the next slew of games that will be different?

Finally I am interested in seeing what Microsoft and Nintendo have up their sleeves. I don’t think that it is good for the industry when one system is really dominating the market. Games are best when the developers are being pushed towards something greater and that only happens when other systems and other companies are strong.

MichealThis will be the first E3 I will be attending after many years of watching it from home and while I am excited, I’m trying to keep my hype levels at a minimum. This is easier to do since we have all the new consoles out from the big three (Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo). So with that “new console smell” starting to wear off, this E3 will be all about the games. Fortunately we do not really have any idea on what games are coming outside of ones previously announced like the The Order: 1886, Uncharted 4, Halo, Gears of War, and Smash Brothers in terms of exclusives for the Big Three. And then there are third party games like Destiny, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and Kingdom Hearts 3.

Of those games mentioned above, only Uncharted 4 and Kingdom Hearts 3 excite me, each for very different reasons. Let’s take Uncharted 4 first; what’s going on with the next Uncharted game!? So many people have left Naughty Dog that it has to have affected the development cycle for the game. We won’t really know the damage done by the departures until the game is out at retail, but its showing at E3 will give us an idea of whether we need to worry. I’m sure Naughty Dog will be able to put together a stunning trailer and maybe a small demo, but if both don’t happen people will start talking.

Now Kingdom Hearts is one of my favorite franchises of all time and my excitement level for the sequel (that should have happened long ago) is high. But I’m a realist, the game will probably not be playable at E3 because Square Enix takes their sweet time with games and Nomura is probably busy with Final Fantasy XV. But bring on a shiny new trailer and I’ll be happy.

E3 predictions:
Microsoft will refocus on games this press conference and possibly drop the price on the Xbox One slightly.
Nintendo will be Nintendo and show another Mario, Zelda, or whatever else they have.
Mirror’s Edge 2 will be completely ignored by EA because of Dice’s issues with Battlefield 4.
– We will miss Jack Tretton at the Sony conference and talk about how much we miss him after.
The Last Guardian will finally be re-revealed for the PS4.

Things I hope don’t happen:
Kinect games clogging up Microsoft’s press conference.
Nintendo spending more time on the 3DS than the Wii U. They need to support the Wii U strongly since no one else will.
God of War 4, for the love of Zeus let that franchise take a long, long breather. Even if they go with Kratos’ brother and it isn’t about Kratos I will be super bummed to see anything God of War pop up.

JoshI don’t know, I’m not really big on predictions but I’ll try to hit some of the less obvious ones.

I’m expecting a PS4 trailer for The Last Guardian along with a release window of around March 2015. It’s about time really. I’m also figuring we’ll see a trailer for Gran Turismo 7 Prologue for the PS4, although they may hold that off for Tokyo Game Show so as not to take anything away from DRIVECLUB.

I fully expect to see something new from MediaMolecule for the PS4 and more on the oddity that Quantic Dream has been teasing us with over the past year. Another Sly Cooper would be cool but I wouldn’t be too surprised by a new Ratchet and Clank in the hands of another Sony Studio.

I get the feeling Grand Theft Auto V will be announced for PS4, Xbox One and PC but it will happen at the Microsoft Press Conference with some timed or exclusive content. Microsoft desperately needs to make a splash and this will be a part of it.

Just Cause 3? Possibly, but I kind of doubt it since Avalanche is going to be pushing Mad Max. At least I assume they’ll be pushing that. It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything.

I’d also like to see the Vita get some love at the show. A mix of PS3 collections/conversions would be sweet along with a few new IP’s from other studios.

I’m also expecting a pretty full presentation on PlayStation Now along with Beta access announced for all PlayStation Plus members and some kind of release window, maybe by Fall.

EmrahWeighing in with about the same amount of importance points as appearing on The Price is Right and going skydiving, being an attendee of E3 is something that has been on my bucket list and I’ll finally be able to cross it off this year.  I am tremendously excited just to be there and if my ‘hoping to see’ items come to fruition, I’ll be even more stoked.  Although I am a big fan of some indie games, I feel that the Triple-A department has been a little lacking.  Many of Sony’s first party studios have been quiet with DRIVECLUB and The Order: 1886 being the only two big first party games slated for this year.  I hope to see announcements for some exclusive Triple-A brand new IP for the PS4.

I do also love my sequels when I truly care about a franchise.  I’d like to see some gameplay from Uncharted 4, a trailer for a God of War debut on the PS4 and a release date for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.  For the Vita, I’d appreciate some beefier experiences that aren’t necessarily RPGs or remakes of PS3 games.  Some more Third Party support and some blockbuster titles from Sony’s studios would fare well for the handheld powerhouse.

Lastly, Ed Boon, creative director at NetherRealm Studios, has been using Twitter to hint at an announcement for early June.  Kiefer Sutherland has revealed that he has recorded voice work for Mortal Kombat’s iconic character Scorpion and there have also been rumors of Injustice 2 being in development.  With NetherRealm traditionally identifying as a one-team, one game at a time studio, it will be interesting to see how/if both of these games will be possible within the given time frame.

DaveA quick rundown of what I’m hoping to see at E3:
– I hope Sony comes out with a price drop for the PS3 all SKU’s. Somewhere around the $150 area.
PS Vita TV coming to the US with DualShock 4 and all US streaming apps.
– Massive details on PlayStation Now. When it’s coming out how much it will cost and how it’s all going to work together.
– What changes (if any) are coming to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection.
– Since the Sony Conference is on Monday I’m hoping that they announce some ridiculous Flash Sale that starts at the end of Conference or when the store updates.
– New firmware updates that at least add folders to the PS4 operating system. A Music player would be great as well. Along with a dedicated YouTube app.

That is all for Part One, please come back at PS Nation for Part Two very soon to find out what the rest of us are hoping to see at E3.

    Great wish lists!

  • I think that Michael and Emrah are in for a rude awakening at their first E3 lol

      Hey Glenn,
I would also recommend these guys wear comfy shoes (Dr. Schols inserts a must) because they are going to be doing a lot of walking and standing.

    • embelievable

Great lists I wish I could go. I predict that the traffic will suck, the floor will be too crowded and the food will be overpriced and suck. I also predict that Sony will push Destiny hard and announce it will work for Morpheus But that Morpheus won’t come out for a while. I predict that Sony will announce a bundle with the PS4, Vita and a cross save game like MLB the show for less than all three combine. I hope they announce some awesome new Vita and Move games. I really hope they announce wallpapers and dynamic themes for the PS4 OS and some new Apps. I would like at least 1 new Original IP. They will announce Grand Theft V for the PS4. I also predict there will be a large amount of alcohol consumed.

I like your thinking. A ‘Complete PlayStation’ bundle would be nice especially as they will be pushing the PlayStation Now service.

      • John Montegudo

Totally! With that giant install base of 7 Million + PS4 owners they should be promoting the Vita to them as well. I don’t see why they can’t get at least 60% of them to buy a Vita!

You know what edition would really be complete?
        PS4 + PSVita + 1-Year PS+ + PS-Now 1 Month full access subscription + Music unlimited 1 month subscription + 2nd Controller + PS Camera + Move Controller + Nav Controller + Project Morpheus + Game

All of that for….. 800$? 900$? how much would you value that at? 😛

        • ChazzH69

I can see them giving one or two months of PlayStation Now free with new systems. Great way to get people hooked.

Well, I recently had my own E3 predictions thread on the Facebook group a while ago, so I’ll re-post my predictions/expectations from there:

    * PS Now Details
    * PS Vita first party game announcement of some kind
    * Reveal of Media Molecule’s new project
    * Reveal of Guerilla Game’s new project
    * More details on Uncharted 4
    * Various demos/announcements of known/unknown 3rd-party games (Destiny, Crew, Division, FFXV, KH3, others)
    * PS Vita TV western release confirmation and release date?
    * Morpheus presentation or demo.

That’s most of what I expect, I’d love to see details on what Quantic Dreams, Santa Monica and Sony Bend are working on, but I’m not sure we’ll get that.

Also, possibly PS4 PS1/PS2 Classics support confirmation and details?

Aside from all that, I’d LOVE to hear/see more about the projects from Quantic Dreams, Santa Monica, Sony Bend and others, and I expect Japan Studios is working on some more PS4 games as well, maybe a KNACK sequel?
