Rise of the Tomb Raider Will be Exclusive to Xbox One

Some sad news for PlayStation fans today, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be exclusive to the Xbox One when it launches in holiday 2015.

In a statement released on the official Tomb Raider website the head of Crystal Dynamics Head, Darrell Gallagher said:

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio…

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.”

In an interview with CVG, when asked to clarify the exclusivity of the game Xbox President Phil Spencer said:

We’re saying what we said on stage. In Holiday 2015, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be exclusive to Xbox. That’s the comment.

We had a lot of similar questions around Titanfall and the structure of our deal is a business relationship that’s frankly between us and Square Enix. I know Crystal Dynamics has issued a statement and we’re going to stand by that. Xbox fans are going to be able to play Tomb Raider next holiday exclusive on Xbox.”

This quote has gained some momentum and people are speculating that this wording means that the game is possibly just a timed exclusive, but nothing can be confirmed because it would likely break some strong deal agreements. Though timed or not what are your thoughts on this deal with Square-Enix and Microsoft? Were you looking forward to the sequel? Sound off in the comments.

Just a nerd from the Windy City. I’m actually really bad at describing myself because I get all self-critical and self-conscious. Follow me on Twitter, @The1stMJC, to see my borderline insane rants on tv shows and other non important subjects. If I’m not tweeting I’m probably just watching Buffy or Firefly for the millionth time.

I’m annoyed at Microsoft for doing this but hope Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix got a bucket load of money.

I’m guessing the exclusivity isn’t a massive amount of time as they keep saying Holiday 2015. My bet is only 3-6 months.

It’s smart for Microsoft, get some exclusives (even if timed).

If Sony were to get this exclusively, Microsoft fanboys would complain just like the Sony ones are.

I doubt this is permanent, so give it time if you don’t get all consoles.

Yeah quite disappointed, found Crystal Dynamics explanation kinda condescending to be honest. I’d have felt better if they basically said, ‘The money truck arrived and it made the choice a no-brainer’. They kept saying how supportive Microsoft is of the franchise, and that this is the best thing for it, but surely Sony have been behind the franchise for years? I always thought of it as a PlayStation game.

His wording in the quote above is very Microsoft, and sounds very much like it will be a timed exclusive. Really hope I get to play it someday, no intention of buying an Xbox, they really did everything in their power to put me off with their whole marketing campaign around release.

Hopefully it does wonders for the studio and we get even better games going forward. I’d like them to clarify how Xbone is the best place for making the most ambitious game they can, but I’m just being pedantic there I guess!

Hope it makes its way to PS4. Ryse, Dead Rising 3 and Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare didn’t stay exclusive for long.

I liked the PS4 definitive edition OK. I prefer the Uncharted series to Tomb Raider, but it did fill the gap between now and the next Uncharted release. I’m very disappointed that PS3 and 4 owners like me will have to wait to play it (if it is in fact a timed exclusive), but I can wait. If and when it comes to PS4 I’ll pick it up, and if not, that’s fine. I’m not going to buy an XBOne, no matter what, so that’s fine. I was looking forward to the next game, and this decision only alienates the fans of the series, which is a shame.

It’s all good I don’t mind the news really. Tomb Raider is an okay franchise, but it doesn’t hold a candle compared to the Uncharted series.

    Hey Mike,

Phil Spencer just announced that it’s a “Timed Exclusive”.

You could ask people in my life to define me and “Loves Lara Croft” would come up each time. Its disappointing but iv seen this coming for years. Its seems like its timed but iv already just trying to forget about it. Or just buy a 360
