UK allocated 800 more PS4 Anniversary Editions

The highly sought-after PlayStation 4 Anniversary Edition will be available online to UK customers next week, with around 800 units on offer.

Sony had received widespread criticism on Wednesday for their decision to offer the console – a limited edition of 12,300 worldwide – in a pop-up shop in London, to gamers who queued through the night. With only a few hours notice given, the move essentially blocked out the vast majority of the country.

However, PlayStation UK chief Fergal Gara has told Eurogamer that many more of the gorgeous PS1-style consoles will be sold online:

“This is a three-day celebration here in London. But it wouldn’t be fair to our fans across the country if there wasn’t access available to them as well. We’re very conscious of fairness. While it’s nice to be able to celebrate here with a retro store, it is the thin end of the volume.

There’s no plan as yet [to release more than 12,300 units]. The volume is a close match with the original production run on PlayStation, so it’s got a nice heritage story. They’re very rare and they’re very special. If you put it into mass production you dilute that. So right now, that’s it. I’m not aware of any plans to change that.”

Gara’s comments on rarity are certainly true; since it’s brief sale to US customers on Sunday, this special PS4 has fetched over $10,000 (£6400) on eBay.

Indeed, this is where some of the outrage over the London store (titled PlayStation 94 Shop) stemmed. The UK branch of eBay saw a wave of the consoles hit yesterday, with prices generally reaching £2000-£3000 ($3100-$4700). Genuine fans took to social media to vent their fury, after such a large number fell into the hands of scalpers.

However, the event thankfully did not attract the Black Friday-level brawls predicted. Even though a small total of 294 units were available across three days, the gathered crowd behaved in a surprisingly civilised manner.

The @PlayStationUK twitter account has stated that from Monday, December 15th to Friday, December 19th, an allocation of PS4s will be available for purchase each day. The exact times and website have yet to be confirmed, though it’s safe to assume Sony Store will be involved.

Let us know in the comments whether you’ve managed to snag one of these premium PlayStations, and stay tuned to PSNation for the latest news on its distribution.
