Sony Online Entertainment Sold to Columbus Nova Corp

SOE

Sony Online Entertainment announced that it has been sold to a New York investment firm by the name of Columbus Nova. SOE will now be known as Daybreak Game Company and are looking to go multiplatform while operating as an independent studio.

SOE/Daybreak currently have EverQuest Next, PlanetSide 2 and H1Z1 in active development and it is promised that this acquisition will not effect players looking forward to future games and it will not change games that are currently operating from SOE. The team at Daybreak Game Company will now have the ability to develop games for PlayStation, Xbox and Mobile platforms because of the change in owners.

The following statements were released from both Columbus Nova and Daybreak Game Company about the sale:

Jason Epstein, Senior Partner of Columbus Nova

“Sony Online Entertainment, newly rebranded as Daybreak, is a great addition to our existing portfolio of technology, media and entertainment focused companies. We see tremendous opportunities for growth with the expansion of the company’s game portfolio through multi-platform offerings as well as an exciting portfolio of new quality games coming up, including the recently launched H1Z1 and the highly anticipated EverQuest Next to be released in the near future. The recent Early Access launch success of H1Z1 is just one testament to the talent and dedication of the studio’s developers to create great online gaming experiences.”

John Smedley, President of Daybreak Game Company

“We are excited to join Columbus Nova’s impressive roster of companies. They have a proven track record in similar and related industries and we are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming. We will continue to focus on delivering exceptional games to players around the world, as well as bringing our portfolio to new platforms, fully embracing the multi-platform world in which we all live.”

Just a nerd from the Windy City. I’m actually really bad at describing myself because I get all self-critical and self-conscious. Follow me on Twitter, @The1stMJC, to see my borderline insane rants on tv shows and other non important subjects. If I’m not tweeting I’m probably just watching Buffy or Firefly for the millionth time.

I think I’m going to be sick. “…a great addition to our existing portfolio….”

This is a clear indication of Sony’s larger financial issues. Even though the Playstation division is profitable this move does not bode well for the future of Playstation. My fear is that Sony will start selling/closing more first party studios. There is even the possibility of “the suits” sacrificing quality and consumer interest in exchange for more profits.
