While we didn’t get any, “and it’s available now,” moments at Sony’s E3 press conference, PS4 owners are getting a treat tonight with the launch of an often requested feature, the PS4 Media Player.

Announced during PlayStation’s pre-conference live show, Media Player will work with both home servers and with USB memory sticks. Once connected, Media Player can be used to play music, movies, and photos just like back on the PS3. Here is the list of supported file formats and codecs, as listed on the PlayStation Blog:

File Formats and Codecs
Video
MKV

  • Visual: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level4.2
  • Audio: MP3, AAC LC, AC-3(Dolby Digital)

AVI

  • Visual: MPEG4 ASP, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level4.2
  • Audio: MP3, AAC LC, AC-3(Dolby Digital)

  • Visual: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level4.2
  • Audio: AAC LC, AC-3(Dolby Digital)

MPEG-2 TS

  • Visual: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level4.2, MPEG2 Visual
  • Audio: MP2(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2), AAC LC, AC-3(Dolby Digital)
  • AVCHD: (.m2ts, .mts)

Photo

  • JPEG (based on DCF 2.0/Exif 2.21)

  • PNG

Music

  • MP3
  • AAC (M4A)

The post also seems to suggest that Media Player can be used to play background music in the way that PlayStation Music currently can. I’ll have to test it later to be sure.

Media Player will be available to download from PlayStation Store any minute now. Exciting times for the PlayStation Nation.

A student of games, I play a bit of everything because I like to see what’s out there. Nothing better than first hand experience when it comes to knowing about games. Current game obsession: Anything MOBA (Paragon, Battleborn, Heroes of the Storm), except, ironically, the most popular ones, LoL and DOTA2.
