Destiny The Taken King is the newest and largest expansion coming to Destiny this September. Since the announcement during the Sony E3 Press Conference questions have been swirling around in people head about how everything will work or change in year 2 of Destiny.

September’s issue of Game Informer has been released and The Taken King is the major topic. I am going to summarize and explain what all has been revealed as of now. If you want to know more about The Taken King check out my Hands on Impression piece from a few weeks ago.

Level Cap
It appears as of now that light level is going away. Being replaced by traditional XP leveling, In original Destiny you leveled your guardian from 1-20 by collecting XP and increasing your level. After reaching level 20 your level progression was strictly tied to what armor pieces you have equipped. Core level cap is being increased to level 40. Luke Smith (director of The Taken King) is quoted in the Game Informer article:

“The conflation of gear and character level led to this place where your identity was determined by things outside of your control,” says creative director Luke Smith. “We don’t want to do that.”

It also appears that Destiny loot system will take into account weapons and gear you already have when you receive a loot drop in The Taken King.

Year 1 Legendary Weapons
Your current legendary weapons that you have been using over the last 10 months will not be ascending to the year 2 level cap in The Taken King. Your current 365 legendary weapons will be useful in the early parts of The Taken King but over time will be replaced by new weapons that will have higher attack rates and better perks. Another quote from Luke Smith explains it well:

“I definitely feel like some of our players are ready to play with some new toys,” says creative director Luke Smith. “And we’ve built a whole bunch of new toys. There are definitely some weapons that you are going to find better versions of – there’s going to be something that replaces that sniper rifle that you love.”

New Ghost
One obvious absence is both released expansions (The Dark Below and House of Wolves) was the voice actor of your ghost Peter Dinklage. Bungie has been very quiet about the status of the ghost voice actor until now. Nolan North will be the new voice of you ghost in The Taken King. Also Nolan North has re-recorded all of the ghost lines in previous destiny content released to date.

Editorial
Call me a fan boy of Destiny if you want but I give Bungie all the credit in the world for the plan they have over the next few years for this game. I am excited to see new more powerful weapons and gear. I look forward to the day I get to dismantle my Fatebringer for a better weapon. Something to keep in mind is all the info released so far has nothing to do with exotic weapons or gear. I feel we will be able to ascend this to year 2 levels. Bungie has been talking about The Taken King as a new game not just an expansion, With an XP level increase of 20 levels and the possibility the light system may or may not be there for further leveling to maybe 50. The Taken King content will rival the content of vanilla Destiny.

Very welcome changes even though some will be mad about having to leave their old weapons and armor behind.
