gma-2015-winner-page-banner-lg

We may be a full month into 2016, but it’s taken that long to tally up the votes, more votes than we’ve ever received for the Golden Minecart Awards. These are your awards, your winners, and they mean much more to the developers knowing that it’s the community that chose them.

Each of the winners is listed here along with some information about the votes. For the audio of the full awards show along with acceptance speeches from many of the winners, please check out Episode 460 of the podcast.

Without further ado, here are your nominees with winners and voting percentages listed below.

Best Action/Adventure (PS Vita)
Shovel Knight – 55%
Grim Fandango – 12%
Helldivers – 11%
Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number – 9%
Broken Age – 8%

It would appear that our community is somewhat taken with Shovel Knight. Grim Fandango in Second and Helldivers in Third were separated by just six votes.

Best RPG (PS Vita)
Bastion – 67%
Sword Art Online: Lost Song – 9%
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel – 9%
Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines – 6%
Dungeon Travelers 2: The Royal Library & The Monster Seal – 4%

Blowout number two of the night as the little Indie that could, Bastion, stomps on the more well established franchises. We also see another close race for Second place as Sword Art Online: Lost Song beats out The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel by just one vote.

Best Puzzle/Platformer (PS Vita)
Shovel Knight – 64%
Super Meat Boy – 15%
Fat Princess: Piece of Cake – 10%
Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones – 5%
Super Time Force Ultra – 4%

Shovel Knight takes home its second Golden Minecart of the night beating all comers handily.

Best Cross-Buy (PS Vita)
Shovel Knight – 54%
Helldivers – 16%
Grim Fandango – 13%
Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number – 7%
Broken Age – 6%
Super Time Force Ultra – 3%

Can anyone stop the juggernaut that is Shovel Knight?? In a repeat of the Best Action/Adventure Category, all five games are the same with only the two and three spots reversed this time around. In an odd twist, we also have two of the spots separated by seven votes this time instead of six and it’s the Four and Five spots.

Game of the Year (PS Vita)
Shovel Knight – 54%
Helldivers – 10%
Bastion – 8%
Grim Fandango – 7%
Broken Age – 5%
Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions – 4%

So, you guys really like Shovel Knight huh? Not bad for a little Indie game that started out on the Wii U. With this win, Shovel Knight has tied Destiny (2014) and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009) with the most Golden Minecarts won (4).

This was a Cross-Buy game and it was nominated in a few other categories below. Will it take the all-time record? Read on and find out.

Best Puzzle/Platformer (PS3)
King’s Quest Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember – 65%
Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones – 13%
Chariot – 7%
Syberia Complete – 6%
Back to Bed – 5%

So it would appear that this year’s theme is either Shovel Knight or blowout. Since Shovel Knight wasn’t released on the PlayStation 3 we have to settle for the blowout.

Close votes again for the runners-up with just three votes separating Third and Fourth place and six votes separating Fourth and Fifth.

Best Fighting Game (PS3)
Dragon Ball Xenoverse – 52%
Dead or Alive 5 Last Round – 22%
BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend – 11%
J-Stars Victory VS+ – 7%
Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax – 3%

Dragon Ball Xenoverse crushes the competition. This year marks probably the most eclectic group of Fighting games we’ve seen in the Golden Minecarts but that’s to be expected as the PlayStation 3’s lifecycle winds down.

Best Sports Game (PS3)
MLB 15: The Show – 69%
NHL 16 (Legacy Edition) – 6% (T)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 – 6% (T)
Madden NFL 16 – 5%
NBA 2K16 – 4%
WRC 5 FIA World Rally Championship – 4% (Write-In)

Is it time to just rename this category the MLB: The Show award? After losing out to FIFA 10 in the very first Golden Minecart Awards, the MLB franchise has been unstoppable over the past six years.

With only 6% of the votes each but the exact same number of votes, we had a tie in Second place between NHL 16 (Legacy Edition) and Pro Evolution Soccer 2016. Our Fifth place became a write-in that narrowly missed the Four spot.

Best RPG (PS3)
Tales of Zestiria – 61%
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel – 13%
The Disgaea Triple Play Edition – 11%
Yakuza 5 – 8% (Write-In)
Class of Heroes 2G – 2%
Lost Dimension – 2%

Another category where it isn’t even close, Tales of Zestiria walks away with it. After the talk on the podcast and a Twitter Poll, Yakuza climbs into the Fourth spot as a write-in vote.

Best Compilation/Remake (PS3)
Resident Evil (HD Remake) – 55%
Borderlands Triple Pack – 25%
The Disgaea Triple Play Edition – 10%
Syberia Complete – 4%
Legend of Kay Anniversary – 2%

You like your triple packs, but not more than the original horror classic Resident Evil. While this one was a bit closer than the others, RE still had a pretty easy time of it.

Best Newcomer (PS3)
Life is Strange – 62%
Shovel Knight – 18%
Helldivers – 12%
Ultratron – 4%
Back to Bed – 1%

It would appear that we’ve finally found the Shovel Knight’s kryptonite, and it’s a pair of teenage girls. Life is Strange robs Shovel Knight of what would have been its record breaking fifth Golden Minecart. Clearly, Life is Strange is a special game.

Best Multiplayer (PS3)
Destiny: The Taken King Legendary Edition – 54%
Helldivers – 19%
The Jackbox Party Pack 2 – 9%
LEGO Dimensions – 8%
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – 8%

Interestingly enough, the original Destiny took this category last year, while Helldivers continues its quest for the Susan Lucci award this year.

Best Family Friendly Game (PS3)
Disney Infinity 3.0 – 69%
LEGO Dimensions – 12%
Never Alone – 9%
King’s Quest Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember – 5%
Skylanders SuperChargers – 2%

This was one of the bigger surprises this year. We really expected much stronger competition but since this appears to be the year of the blowout it’s only fitting that the Best Family Friendly game is from Disney.

Best Action/Adventure Game (PS3)
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – 50%
Yakuza 5 – 34%
Life is Strange – 8%
Transformers: Devastation – 4%
Never Alone – 3%

This seems to be the most tightly contested category each year. Last year the top four were separated by less than twenty votes. This time around, in the Year of the Blowout, the margin from One to Two was much greater, but it was still close enough to make it the closest runner-up in any category this year.

Game of the Year (PS3)
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – 48%
Yakuza 5 – 31%
Life is Strange – 10%

Best Free-to-Play (PS4)
GUNS UP! – 52%
World of Tanks – 20%
Planetside 2 – 13%
Gems of War – 5% (Write-In)
Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight – 4%
Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires: Free Alliances – 3%

Yes, World of Tanks was still in Beta at the end of last year but GUNS UP! ran away with our first Free-To-Play Minecart Award. Gems of War snuck into Fourth place with a strong write-in vote.

Best Racing Game (PS4)
DRIVECLUB Bikes – 53%
Project CARS – 31%
Need for Speed – 7%
WRC 5 FIA World Rally Championship – 3%
F1 2015 – 2%

The standalone DRIVECLUB Bikes was able to beat out the beefier and capitally reversed Project CARS to take another relatively (for this year anyway) close race.

Best Fighting Game (PS4)
Mortal Kombat X – 65%
Ultra Street Fighter IV – 12%
Dragon Ball Xenoverse – 9%
J-Stars Victory VS+ – 5%
Skullgirls 2nd Encore – 4%
BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend – 4%

Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter are One and Two. What is this, 1993? Either way, Mortal Kombat X destroyed the competition this year.

Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth were absurdly close this year with three votes separating Fourth and Fifth, and then two votes separating Fifth and Sixth.

Best Sports Game (PS4)
Rocket League – 70%
MLB 15: The Show – 13%
NBA 2K16 – 4%
NHL 16 – 3%
Madden NFL 16 – 3%

Wow. I never thought I’d see the day. The King is dead! Long live the King! The community finally found something that could take their sporting attention away from the MLB franchise. Down at the bottom, NHL and Madden were separated by just one vote.

Best RPG (PS4)
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt – 54%
Fallout 4 – 21%
Bloodborne – 16%
Bastion – 3%
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster – 2%
Tales of Zestiria – 2% (Write-In)
Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance – 0%

Three big franchises in the top spots but The Witcher took the top honors pretty easily. Tales of Zestiria was able to claw its way to the Sixth spot over Disgaea 5 which received only two votes leaving it statistically at 0%.

Best Survival/Horror (PS4)
Until Dawn – 80%
Dying Light – 12%
SOMA – 3%
Resident Evil (HD Remake) – 3%
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter – 1% (T)
Resident Evil Revelations 2 – 1% (T)

In a year of blowouts, Until Dawn has both the biggest margin of victory and the largest number of votes for a game in a single category.

Interestingly, it’s not the largest margin of victory in the history of the Golden Minecarts. That honor goes to Persona 4 Golden in the Best PS Vita RPG/Strategy category where it took 81% of the vote compared to the runner-up Ragnarok Odyssey which pulled in only 6%.

Best HD Remake/Remaster (PS4)
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection – 75%
Tearaway Unfolded – 8%
God of War III Remastered – 7%
DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition – 3%
Beyond: Two Souls – 2%

After winning this category last year with The Last of Us Remastered, Naughty Dog keeps hold of the top spot here with Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. In the fight for Second place, God of War III fell short by just five votes.

Best Newcomer (PS4)
Bloodborne – 46%
Rocket League – 18%
The Order: 1886 – 11% (T)
Until Dawn – 11% (T)
Life is Strange – 8%
Axiom Verge – 6%

Bloodborne takes top honors in an eclectic group where the votes were spread a little more evenly than most of the other categories.

Most Unique Experience (PS4)
Tearaway Unfolded – 41%
Life is Strange – 21%
I am Bread – 11%
Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture – 9%
Until Dawn – 5% (Write-In)
GALAK-Z – 5%
Bloodborne – 4% (Write-In)
King’s Quest Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember – 2% (Write-In)

This is always a fun category since it’s so wide open. Yes, Tearaway Unfolded won pretty handily and it is quite unique, but the vote was so spread out that three different write-ins were able to pull in enough of the votes to be recognized.

Best Multiplayer (PS4)
Rocket League – 63%
Star Wars Battlefront – 14%
Destiny: The Taken King Legendary Edition – 14%
Fat Princess Adventures – 4%
The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited – 2% (Write-In)
Call of Duty: Black Ops III – 1% (Write-In)
Rock Band 4 – 1%

Rocket League takes home its second Minecart of the night. The fight for number Two was so tight that Destiny missed it by just two votes.

The crazy stuff however was happening at the bottom of the category. Two different write-ins overtook the final spot pushing the official nominee, Rock Band down to Seventh place.

Best Family Friendly Game (PS4)
Disney Infinity 3.0 – 63%
Tearaway Unfolded – 14%
LEGO Dimensions – 10%
Rock Band 4 – 7%
Skylanders SuperChargers – 2%

Another surprising result. In a seemingly stacked category, Disney Infinity 3.0 runs away with it. I’m not sure whether it’s more shocking that LEGO Dimensions didn’t make much of a dent or that Skylanders SuperChargers pulled in only 2% of the vote for the second time.

Best Action/Adventure Game (PS4)
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – 43%
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt – 19%
Batman: Arkham Knight – 14%
Bloodborne – 10%
The Order: 1886 – 8%
Just Cause 3 – 5%

Another decent spread as far as this year goes but Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain easily takes what appears to be a pretty tough category for its third Golden Minecart of the night.

Game of the Year (PS4)
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – 34%
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt – 13% (Write-In)
Fallout 4 – 12%
Bloodborne – 9%
Rocket League – 8%
Batman: Arkham Knight – 6% (Write-In)
Until Dawn – 5%
Life is Strange – 2% (Write-In)
Guitar Hero Live – 2% (Write-In)
Tales of Zestiria – 2% (Write-In)
Just Cause 3 – 1%

In the clearest example of how hard it is to narrow down this category, five different write-ins made the list but even if The Witcher III had been on the ballot, it’s unlikely that anything would have changed here. With this win, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain ties the record for most Golden Minecarts with four.

This was simply the year of Metal Gears, Shovel Knights, and Blowouts.
