Disney Infinity Next: Spring 2016

Disney showed off some of their plans for 2016 today with a Nintendo Direct-style presentation on YouTube. The plan is to continue expanding the Disney Infinity 3.0 platform throughout the year and they mentioned that this will include new Play Sets from all four major properties: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. From the sound of it, we won’t be seeing a Disney Infinity 4.0 this year and they’ll be treating 3.0 as a platform to build on… for now at least.

Nick and Judy from Zootopia (available today) were highlighted along with their new moves. Judy has both a tranquilizer gun and powerful leg combos, being a rabbit and all, while Nick has a Sidekick elephant and they both use a giant popsicle to smack down enemies.

Marvel Battlegrounds, the four-player brawler being developed by United Front Games looks like it’s coming along nicely. A lot of what was shown off today was also at New York Comic Con last year which I discussed on Episode 444 of the podcast. The trickiest part of the gameplay is getting every single Marvel character from Disney Infinity 2.0 and 3.0 to work in the set without having any overpowered. Every single character was rebalanced specifically for this Play Set.

The new Captain America was shown off with all the new special moves he can pull off with his shield. Black Panther is a great melee character and can juggle enemies in the air while pummeling them. Ant-Man is more of a defensive character that uses his ability to change size as a way to sneak up on characters and catch them off-guard, while Vision is a very fast character that can take out enemies with surprising speed.

Eight arenas are available in the Play Set all with destructible environments (like the floors) leading to multiple levels. You’ll start in a train yard in Manhattan, work your way to the Moon, off to Knowhere, and eventually a showdown with a massive Ultron. Disney also teased that more (as yet unannounced) Marvel characters will be coming this year. And for those of you who have been patiently waiting, the once Vita exclusive Black Suit Spider-Man will finally be available as a stand-alone character.

With the live-action Jungle Book movie on the horizon, the team delved into the archives to the 1967 animated version and will be bringing Baloo the Bear out as a new character. They felt he would be the most fun to play since he’s so laid back and can pretty much dance his way around using his belly and butt to attack enemies.

Fan feedback was the key to bringing Baloo to the game. Disney has said it’s those constant requests for classic characters that led directly to this choice. Charming is the best word to describe how Baloo looks within the game from what I saw.

That was pretty much all that was shown but before they ended they strongly hinted at new characters coming this year based on Finding Dory and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
