Announced for Western markets back in November and previously released in Asia last July, first-person dungeon crawler RPG, Ray Gigant will arrive in North American and Europe on May 3rd, digitally only on PSN for both PS Vita and PlayStation TV. The game was developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment and Experience Inc. with Acttil servicing as publisher in the West.

Ray Gigant takes plays in the near future in a world that has been ravaged by giant monsters from space, the Gigants. A Tokyo boy named Ichiya Amakaze one day awakens the power to fight the Gigants and thus begins his hero’s journey to presumably save humanity from this existential threat.

In Ray Gigant, dungeon crawling sections are bookended with story sequences that set the scene and flesh out the characters and plot.

Beyond Ray Gigant’s emphasis on narrative, the game also features some nice looking 2D animation in combat, though in traditional dungeon crawler style, the character sprites hitting each other is never actually depicted. An interesting thing Ray Gigant does bring to the table in combat is the Slash Beat Mode, a brief rhythm mini game that determines how powerful a certain special attack will be.

Oh, and the boss battles against giant enemies look pretty awesome. Glimpse the trailer for the Japanese release below.

Ray Gigant is rated T and is subtitled in English with the original Japanese audio. No word on pricing yet, but with release just a few weeks away, we won’t have to wait long.

A student of games, I play a bit of everything because I like to see what’s out there. Nothing better than first hand experience when it comes to knowing about games. Current game obsession: Anything MOBA (Paragon, Battleborn, Heroes of the Storm), except, ironically, the most popular ones, LoL and DOTA2.
