Last Week on #DailyPoll – 5/6/16

Last week on Daily Poll, the poll posted daily to the PS Nation twitter account, @PSNation, I did something a little different. Rather than a series individual questions, there were 16 entries into the Daily Poll Showdown. Monday thru Thursday saw groups of three of these face off and the 4 winners then battled for top spot on Friday. The theme was game genres, to see what game genre was PS Nation’s “favorite” genre. Here’s what the bracket looked like:

Monday
The first round of entries: first person shooter, adventure game, platformer and SHMUP.

These results surprised me a little bit. Given how big the Call of Duty machine is, and with other games like Battlefield or Destiny selling huge numbers, I expected FPS to win. By comparison, I was considering “adventure game” to be things like Broken Age. I wonder if the Telltale games were big on people’s minds when voting. Alas, poor SHMUPS.

Tuesday
Tuesday’s entries: third person shooter, fighting game, turn-based RPG, and flight/space combat.

This one turned out more like I expected, especially for the winner. I did think fighting games might do a little better, but either it’s more of a loud-but-niche crowd than I expected or too many fighting game fans just like third person shooters more. Either way, not a bad showing by the turn-based RPGs, but not enough to make the finals.

Wednesday
Wednesday’s entries were: action RPG, puzzle, sports, and strategy.

Wow, talk about a landslide. I thought action RPG might take it (especially with Dark Souls 3 just coming out) but I really thought sports would give it a run for its money. Madden is such a huge franchise and everything. Calvin says we’re all nerds, but I dunno. Games like Skyrim and The Witcher are getting pretty mainstream, at least within the game industry.

Thursday
Thursday’s entries: racing, brawler, MOBA, and music/rhythm.

This one had some big unknowns for me. A lot of racing games get made, sure, but it sometimes seems like it is super niche. MOBA is a huge genre on PC, so I was curious just how well it would do with our audience. Brawler is such a wide ranging genre these days and I thought that might work for it a little more. And music/rhythm… well that’s one I didn’t expect to do well. It’s definitely not as big a genre as it is in Japan or Korea.

Friday
With that, time for the finals. The winners of the four previous days face off in a winner-take-all, no-holds-barred, battle royale. Or something like that.

A bit more even than some of the previous polls but action RPG manages to take the crown!

That’s all for this week. Normal Daily Poll questions next week but please let me know what you thought of this format. Good? Bad? I’d think I’d like to use it again, if I can come up with another list of 16 comparable things.

COD & Madden may sell through the roof, but, as I feel this poll indicates, many of those purchasers don’t visit gaming sites. They buy their annual editions of these games & that’s all the gaming they think about until the next year’s iterations show up.

My personal favorite genre is Turn-based RPG. Sad, but not surprised, it didn’t make the finals.
