SloClap Reveals Online Melee Action Game Absolver with Kung Fu Action Trailer

Absolvers are “an elite corps of combatants fighting to maintain stability in the world,” and Absolver is an upcoming action game coming from writers of humorous press releases, Devolver Digital, and SloClap, a young indie development group based in Paris made up of “veteran designers, programmers, and artists that met while working together at Ubisoft on Watch_Dogs and the Ghost Recon series” (which we recently got to see more of).

I’ve seen Absolvers described in three different ways today. The trailer below calls it “online melee action.” The press release calls it an “online combat RPG,” and the announcement post over on the PlayStation Blog calls Absolver an “online martial arts action game.” I imagine, most likely it will boast characteristics of all of these but “online martial arts melee combat action RPG” doesn’t really roll off the tongue.

Taking place in a fictional forsaken land ruled by the Guides after the fall of the Adal Empire, players will take on the roles of Prospects, wandering around and meeting other Prospects, learning new combat styles, attacks, and acquiring better weapons, powers and armor, in the hopes of joining the Absolvers. Players will be able to team up with other Prospects and explore the dungeon mines of Adal for some PvE or take on others for some PvP action in arenas scattered throughout the world.

Battles are “an intense real-time flow of attacks, dodges, feints and counters, with all aspects of gameplay customizable, including combat styles, weapons and even individual attack sequences in [players’s] Combat Deck[s].”

“The studio is excited to debut our first game with Devolver Digital and get it into the hands of gamers and media at E3; Absolver is the result of our combined experiences in game development and we believe that our team has created something special together,” said Pierre de Margerie, creative lead at developer Sloclap. “We think the world would be a much better place if there were no guns. Then we could finally focus on important things, like sword fighting and how to kill a man with one punch.”

SloClap will be showing off Absolver at E3 this year with hands-on demos, and the studio will also be hosting a live stream June 13 at 5:00PM Pacific on Twitch to debut gameplay.

“Our extensive, international focus groups illustrate that people want to be able to punch faceless, nameless strangers over the internet,” notes Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker. “Absolver is going to be your digital outlet for real-time, fluid beatdowns of those that stand against you.”

Oh, Devolver Digital, you guys.

Absolver has been in development since May 2015 and is targeting release on PS4, other consoles, and PC in 2017.

A student of games, I play a bit of everything because I like to see what’s out there. Nothing better than first hand experience when it comes to knowing about games. Current game obsession: Anything MOBA (Paragon, Battleborn, Heroes of the Storm), except, ironically, the most popular ones, LoL and DOTA2.
