The Monthly Question: August 2016

The holiday season is still a few months away but the AAA video game season is rapidly approaching.

To shine a light on the games we are excited for, I asked the PS Nation writers:

What game are you most looking forward to this Fall?
Andy Richardon (PSN ID: andyscout)
I don’t know that I’m looking forward to it the most but there is a game I’m interested in that may fall under people’s radars. That game is Exist Archive. It’s a spiritual successor to one of my favorite RPGs of all time: Valkyrie Profile.

From the footage I’ve seen and some of the coverage I’ve read, the game seems to have a similar story and exploration system. One of my favorite aspects of Valkyrie Profile was the combo based combat system, so I hope that system is reflected in Exist Archive as well. Definitely a game I’m looking forward to when it releases later this year.

Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky releases on PS4 and PS Vita on October 18th.

I’m looking forward to PS VR! That is all.

PlayStation VR launches on October 13th.

Despite being ridiculously excited for PS VR, the game that really holds my interest this Fall is No Man’s Sky, with Final Fantasy XV being a very close second.

Check out Michael’s Hands-On preview with No Man’s Sky which releases for PS4 August 9th.

From everything that I have seen about PS VR, I think Farpoint has piqued my interest. The PS VR Aim controller looks like a kid’s toy but acts like a real gun in the game. It allows you to look down the sights, read the amount of ammunition you have, and literally shoot from the hip. It is an exciting time ahead with such a wonderfully immersive technology and I cannot wait to see what else is on the horizon.

When I look at Fall/Holiday 2016, it looks similar to the kind of season we have before a new console generation is released. This makes sense, of course, because we have PS VR launching and PS4 Neo lurking in the shadows.

PlayStation, with the exception of The Last Guardian, does not have much releasing software-wise outside of the usual titles like Call of Duty or Battlefield franchises from third parties.

So what I’m looking forward to does not fall under the category of AAA, the games I’m interested in are indie titles. Games like Gang Beasts, which is a ridiculous multiplayer brawler that has been kicking around PC for years, as well as the beautiful looking adventure game Night in the Woods, and the insanely brutal Mother Russia Bleeds, which I believe is targeting a 2016 release date.

While the game I am looking forward to the most releases in December, the one I’m excited for is early enough in the month to qualify as a Fall release. It is South Park: The Fractured But Whole. The Stick of Truth was the first RPG I ever completed, and that was 100% because of the material.

TFBW sets game in the South Park gang’s “Super Hero” adventures, which are some of my favorite elements of recent seasons. In addition, the game will give players the ability to play as a girl if they choose, which I always support. I know Matt and Trey will once again bring their A-game, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.

South Park The Fractured But Whole releases on December 6th.

Ben Palmer (PSN ID: CNPalmer)
Oh jeebus… you want me to pick just one? Just. One. That is insane. I mean we have a tremendous, and I mean tremendous line-up coming up. For starters, on the remastered front the Bioshock Collection is coming so I’ll get a chance to sink into Rapture since I never played the PS3 releases. Then we have South Park: The Fractured But Whole releasing, which is just going to make everyone revert back a 14 year old again.

On the more mature front Call of Duty Infinite Warfare is coming out, which looks like it will have one of the best campaigns in a long time, but most notably, and I picked this as I was typing it out, I’m MOST excited for the Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered release.

I easily sank over 1,000 hours into that game and it was really my baptism into the online multiplayer world, so getting to relive those maps, the strategies, and the excitement all over has me pumped to be playing it again.

Make sure you get Call of Duty Modern Warfare remastered when you buy Call of Duty Infinite Warfare when it releases on PS4 on November 4th.

Dishonored 2 can not get here fast enough. I was a huge fan of the first Dishonored. There were multiple ways to complete every mission and it could played using stealth or going for a full frontal assault. The Bethesda E3 press conference showed some game play of Empresses Emily, a new playable character. I cannot wait to be back in Corvo’s shoes for another great adventure in a unique steampunk world and to try out Emily’s new abilities.

Dishonored 2 releases on November 11th.

Your Turn
These are the games we are looking forward too. What are yours? Tell us in the The Monthly Question thread in the PS Nation Forums.

Thanks as always to John Payant for editing.

I love all things video games. When I am not gaming I am watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, BBQing, and reading.

Glad you’re only asking about the rest of this year – it looks like there are a ton coming in 2017!! I have two I’m looking to spend fall/early winter with: Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II & Earthlock: Festival of Magic.
