PS4 Firmware 4.50 Update & Features

Today, Sony revealed details on its newest firmware update. Firmware version 4.5 will be hitting select beta users today. On the PlayStation Blog, Sony gave some details on the features coming with this latest update.

External Hard Drive Support

While upgrading the internal drive is very easy, Sony is aware that its user base has been asking for external support since launch. Now it’s coming in update 4.5 with support for up to 8TB. Just plug a USB 3.0 drive into your PS4 and you instantly have more storage. We have a detailed explanation of how this all works in a separate post.

Custom Wallpaper

You can now take any screenshot and set that as a background image for your main screen on PS4. You can perform minor adjustments to the image to make sure all your icons will still be visible.

Quick Menu Refresh

In the last update Sony introduced a quick menu that popped up on the left hand side of the screen. This will now be cleaned up and made slightly smaller. You will now have the ability to edit party settings and even join or leave party chat without going to a completely separate screen.

Simplified Notifications List

Ever get lost in your Notifications tab trying to check download status? Now the Notifications screen has been trimmed down. It will only have one tab with all the previous info trimmed down to access and check at a glance.

Posting on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds

You will now have the ability to post directly into the What’s New feed while in this menu. You will also have the ability to tag friends in posts to show off your latest accomplishments.

3D Blu-rays on PlayStation VR

VR owners are now getting a feature they have wanted since launch a short time ago, the ability to view 3D movies in stereoscopic 3D directly on the PS VR headset.

This is just part of the features expected in the 4.5 firmware update. Launch details and additional features will be coming in the next few weeks.
