E3 2018: Hands-On Video – Descent
The classic 90s “six degrees of freedom” shooter, Descent, is coming back. While this reimagining from developer Descent Studios and publisher Little Orbit includes a single player campaign mode, the emphasis is on multiplayer.
The game is set in a future where Earth’s resources have been exhausted, so now the race is on to mine the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The single player campaign will include more than fifteen missions littered with combat, puzzles, side quests, and boss battles. Check out the video below to see my playthrough of a small section of the single player mode.
Multiplayer consists of up to four players in online combat or co-op with Survival, Anarchy, and Corporate War. A nice surprise is that free multiplayer DLC updates are planned through 2019.
The ships in Descent, twenty of them in total, are grouped into four different classes and they’re all customizable and upgradeable.
It’s been twenty-three years since I played the original but this new version made me feel right at home. Descent is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and Linux in Q4 of 2018. Check out my hands-on with the game below.
