Golden Minecart Awards 2018: PS Nation Staff Picks

Golden Minecart Awards 2018: PS Nation Staff Picks

We decided to switch things up a bit this year. We cut down the number of categories we were nominating in and we’ve all decided to share our personal top three in each category.

Don’t worry though, you’ll still be able to vote in the revised categories, but this year we’re only allowing one vote per IP address and voting will be open for a two week period so go vote now.

In the meantime, check out the Staff’s top three in each category and let us know what you think.

So many great games to choose from this year. I had to be a bit selective in my process knowing that those last few slots were going to be a battle between what I liked most and what I thought deserved the spot.

God of War feels like it may be the end, and possibly the peak, of an era in gaming. The game has a very traditional and straightforward design, but the combat system, storytelling, and visuals are all some of the best ever in the medium.

2018 felt like a breakout year for PlayStation VR, with games like ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission and Beat Saber garnering a lot of attention and praise, and even sliding into the coveted category of “must-haves” as is evident by the PS VR bundles built around these titles.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is everything I wanted from a sequel to a fantastic game. Pure gaming gold. I couldn’t fault the epic Dead Cells and even played it instead of many other top titles. Overcooked! 2 is a brilliant sequel that adds loads to a unique and brilliant co-op game. Plus you can play it online too.

For Marvel’s Spider-Man, I’m not a fan of this character specifically, but you can’t deny how amazing this game is. In my opinion, this is Insomniac’s best work to date, and fortunately for me, I still have a lot of content to get through.

I was lucky to get God of War early, and it dominated my time for more than a couple of weeks. It’s a compelling story coupled with some epic battles while it sets the bar for game visuals. With Red Dead Redemption 2, minor control issues are really my only complaint. Definitely worth the long wait.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a beautiful game with a terrific story and combat. It’s the deepest Assassin’s Creed game yet and it will keep you busy for many hours. The RPG elements have been pushed to the forefront and work quite well.

In MLB The Show 18, online still is rough, but everything else about this game is perfect. It’s the best sports game on the market. I played this game more than any other in 2018. NHL 19 is a close second in my opinion for the best sports game of 2018. The subtle improvements in player movement take the game closer to the real product, and the online features are great.

2018 was an amazing year for Spider-Man, from not feeling very well in Avengers: Infinity War to Miles Morales taking the reins in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In between those marquee movies, Insomniac made what I feel is the greatest Spider-Man game of all time.

When it was announced that Insomniac would be making an exclusive Spider-Man game for Sony there were a lot of questions. Does this fit in any current Marvel Universe? How much creative control does Insomniac have? Will the swinging be good?

Thankfully the answer to the first two questions were that Insomniac pretty much had license to do whatever they wanted with Spidey and create their own universe. More importantly though, that swinging was amazing. I wrote a whole review on why I love the game so I would suggest reading that because I could go on forever.

God of War is the only game this year that made me want to go back once I finished it. Not to mention it’s drop dead gorgeous and plays like a dream. With Marvel’s Spider-Man, it’s Spidey on the PS4, ’nuff said. In LEGO DC Super-Villains it’s fun to be bad.

Marvel’s Spider-Man taking Game of the Year feels a bit biased on my part because I’m such a huge Spider-Man fan, but more than that, this is the game I had the most fun playing. God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 were both outstanding games, but the game I enjoyed the most was Spider-Man.
