Apex Legends Implements New Penalty, Respawn Immediately Rolls it Back

Yesterday, patch 1.1 came to Apex Legends, which added more than a few new quality of life improvements, such as the ability to mute players during Legend selection, the ability to group up with the last squad you played with. If you feel so inclined, feel free to read up on all the patch notes here.

One feature not mentioned in the patch notes, however, was a Leave Early Penalty. Players yesterday realized that they were unable to play if they quit too often. The five-minute penalty would incur for any player left three games early. Leaving early also included leaving before your Banner card timer expired.

The Respawn Community Manager addressed the issue on the Apex Legends Reddit:

So internally, we have been working on and testing this feature but it wasn’t our intention or plan to have it go live with the update that went out today. There was a piece of script that was missing and caused the leaving match early penalty to be turned on when it shouldn’t be. That’s why it wasn’t in the patch notes.

We updated the script, tested with QA and it’s now disabled for all platforms. We don’t have an ETA for if or when this would come out for real. Apologies for the confusion.

While this feature has since been removed, but a penalty has been an often requested feature on Reddit for a while. It can be understandably frustrating when your teammate goes down, and just before you get to a respawn beacon that teammate leaves. On the contrary, many other players don’t want to be forced to spectate a game just to avoid punishment for leaving.

At present, the only sort of “penalty” for quitting players is that they will gain no XP from the match, which some argue is enough to dissuade players from quitting. Some players would prefer to leave a match than wait for teammates who may have no intention of respawning them.

It’s possible some kind of penalty could go live in the future, although when, or if, that happens could be a while.
