Bungie Looking Ahead at “A New Era for Destiny 2”

Earlier this week, Bungie revealed their latest “This week at Bungie” community update for Destiny 2. The newest edition came with details on many of the changes players can expect with the launch of the Season of Opulence, coming June 4. Beyond that, however, Community Manager Deej also mentioned thay Bungie may be looking ahead at the future of Destiny.

The community update ended with a rather tantalizing quote:

Right now, our focus is on Opulence. But after the Season has launched and Raid belts have been awarded, we’ll be looking deeper into the future, and sharing with you more about a new era for Bungie and Destiny 2.

There are a lot of things this could mean, so let’s break it down.

One of the first theories cropping up is that this could be hinting at the end of Destiny 2 and the start of Destiny 3. Destiny originally launched in September of 2014, with its sequel to follow in Sept of 2017. If we follow this trend, it may come as little surprise if we hear an announcement of Destiny 3 slated for a Autumn 2020 release. More than a few Destiny 3 rumors have been circulating, some of which bring interesting ideas to the table such as granting new abilities based on players choosing to embrace, rather than reject, the power of Darkness.

On another hand, this could mean Bungie may be finally ready to make Destiny 2 their true platform, a game they add onto for years to come. After their split from Activision earlier this year, they are no longer beholden to shareholders. With newfound freedom, Bungie may be laying the groundwork for great new things to come. For now, we’ll have to wait and see what this “new era” of Bungie could really be.
