Marvel’s Spider-Man Developer Insomniac Games Acquired by Sony

This generation has been one of major success for Sony and PlayStation. Amazing games from equally amazing studios have helped spur the PlayStation 4 to great heights. Many of these games came from first-party studios, such as Sucker Punch, Guerilla Games, and Sony Santa Monica, which made inFAMOUS: Second Son, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and 2018’s God of War, respectively. There have also been numerous high-profile games exclusive to Sony’s platform that did not come from in-house studios, such as Quantic Dream’s Detroit: Become Human and Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games. Now, it seems one of those things is set to change.

Earlier this week, it was revealed both on PlayStation’s Twitter and on the Insomniac official blog that Sony Interactive Entertainment has acquired Insomniac Games.

To many, this may come as a bit of a surprise, as Insomniac and Sony have had such a close relationship that it seemed for a long time that Insomniac were already first-party. With games from series including Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet and Clank, and Resistance: Fall of Man, it is easy to forget that Insomniac were independent. Indeed, the only Insomniac game outside of the PlayStation family was Sunset Overdrive, with many see as a precursor to Marvel’s Spider-Man.

While Insomniac’s current project is under lock and key, after the runaway success of Spider-Man, a new webslinging adventure is surely in the works. It may be a while before we see it, but after seeing what they did last time, I’m sure we’re all more than willing to wait it out. At least, a little while…

Are you excited about this new acquisition? How could this have taken so long? Could this mean Sony is finally making moves and grabbing up strong, talented studios like certain podcast hosts have been saying they should? Let’s talk about this and more in the PS Nation Forums, on Facebook, and on Twitter using #AskPSNation.
