PlayStation Will Not Be At E3 2020

Last year, Sony shocked the gaming world when it announced it would not be holding its annual E3 press conference, nor would it have a presence on the show floor. This was a first in the 24-year-long history of ESA-sponsored show. Now, it seems Sony has decided to do it again. PlayStation will be absent from E3 yet again for 2020.

A spokesperson from Sony Interactive told GamesIndustry.biz,

After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the [Entertainment Software Association] as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.

We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.

From this quote, it sounds like SIE and PlayStation are trying to build fan loyalty by attending fan events such as PAX. It is also likely there will be some PlayStation events for fans to attend as well. Could this year see the return of PlayStation Experience? (I would love that!)

This seems to be a new direction Sony is headed towards, one more focused on building loyalty with gamers through events dedicated to gamers. While PlayStation has traditionally used E3 conferences as a stage for showcasing new Hardware, as well as giving investors reasons to keep investing in the PlayStation brand, perhaps the upcoming PlayStation 5 could be the start of a new era for Sony and PlayStation.

E3 is the largest North American video game expo, and has been a staple event on the gaming calendar for years. 2019 marked the first time Sony would miss an E3 since it’s creation in 1995. There was no PlayStation presence on the show floor, nor did they hold their annual press conference. It was a shake-up, especially for the Entertainment Software Association.

How are you feeling about Sony skipping E3 again? Are you excited? Could this be a sign that PSX could be returning? Probably not, but I like to dream! Tel me about your PlayStation dreams over on the PS Nation Forums, on Facebook, and on Twitter using #AskPSNation.
