Gameplay:

I was really looking forward to Disintegration. Not only was it from a mind that helped create Halo, it was something different in a genre I have a love/hate relationship with. That difference is a Grav Cycle, and its impact should vary by user.

Disintegration centers around a Grav Cycle pilot, Romer Schoal, who meets up with a rag tag group of freedom fighters. You begin by being interrogated, and things escalate from there. The story feels sort of by-the-book, but succeeds in creating an interesting world. The story showed spirit from the very beginning and gave me hope of an eventful story, but in the end did let me down.

While the story is good and the world is interesting, what about the main mechanic? Well the shooting is just okay and can be rather difficult, but for good reason. As I stated above, the Grav Cycle is your primary weapon. Shooting with a moving vehicle can be rough and not very precise.

With that said, I found the combat to be difficult until I got the intricacies down. By no means did I find the combat uninteresting, it’s just different and hard to get used to. However, I do not feel like it’s the next iteration of FPS shooters like a Halo or Call of Duty.

What is interesting and different is the squad component of Disintegration. That aspect of the game works very well and is thought out well. You have varying members with different skills to help you make your way through combat. I found my team to be very useful and dependable. I would quickly send them off to eliminate bigger targets while I would provide cover fire and take care of the small fries.

While the Grav Cycle starts off slow and sluggish, and it’s hard to get a bead on enemies, it helps when you zoom in from a distance and take out enemies that way. The enemies usually hide in and out of sight and rush and fall back. You do occasionally find an enemy that just stands there.

So Disintegration is not your usual shooter. It felt more like a squad based shooter. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the combat, but it took a few hours to get used to it and enjoy the nuances.

Visuals:

At first, I didn’t like he visuals. They appeared to have low texture counts and not as crisp as as some of the newer titles out there. While that was disappointing, they did grow on me after awhile. However, there are some highlights to the game’s graphics.

To start, the design is top notch, I totally fell into what the game was selling. The armatures, while based on a design aesthetic, are different enough so as to appreciate the world building. Also, my favorite aspect is destructible environments. Cover will crumble against enemy fire and then will be destroyed. Piles of wood will splinter and fall when shot. I was totally immersed and I found I could use that feature to my benefit as well.

Audio:

The audio category of any review is always the hardest for me. I usually do not notice the music unless it’s really good or really bad. With Disintegration, the music is fitting for the game; it did not stand out either way. It did not strike me as bad, nor underwhelming.

Online/Multiplayer:

This mode has beendifficult to review. I have tried several times to log on, but with no luck. I got in once and found the combat slow and frustrating, but not nearly enough to review the mode properly.

The multiplayer has three modes: Zone Control, Collector, and Retrieval. Basically, these are Disintegration’s takes on old tropes. One interesting take away is that when you enter multiplayer you can choose your role. There are four various roles that cover a variety of play styles. Also, you can choose your visual style. From neon to knights, there’s a choice for most people.

Conclusion:

I was really looking forward to Disintegration when I heard about it. A creator of Halo was attached and it was a new take on the FPS genre. While this didn’t exactly hold true to me, it was new and a good try. With all its many parts coming into an interesting take, I would recommend this title usually.

The only part that’s extremely disappointing is my trouble with the multiplayer. At first glance it does not seem I would enjoy this mode, but I am not able to fully gauge or review it. I am going to pass on reviewing the multiplayer; basically, I am only rating the single player campaign, which is good but could use some filler. Disintegration is a play, but I would wait for a sale.
