Square is going to take a crack at something new with the online-only Final Fantasy XI. FFXI will be one of the first games ever to allow console players on the PS2 to play along side PC players. As well through the use of standardized and translatable messages, the whole world, regardless of language, will play in the same game.
Players will explore a world that is constantly changing whether they are playing or not. You get to choose the gender, class and attributes of your character. One can also choose the kingodm that for which they will conquer and defend. Unlike most of the FF series battles will not have a special engine and will occur in real time as part of exploration.
All in all, FFXI sounds good, but we got board of games like Diablo II years ago. Unfortunately, this doesn't sound like its going to offer anything new to the online adventure game equation. They boom for a few months but online games get old fast, and people starting hacking the game and cheating. Hopefully FFXI will offer something to keep itself afloat among a sea of sinkers.
