Gun is one the best western themed games that we have ever played, not to mention, its one of the best 3rd person shooters. It’s like True Crimes: Streets of LA meets the Old West. The game is surprisingly diverse, allowing for a totally Old West experience including hunting, horse riding, cattle herding, poker, and shooting. Unfortunately, Gun is so violent that we really felt it deserved the ‘Mature’ rating and we wouldn’t recommend it for impressionable young children.
Regardless, we loved it. The game was fantastic. Truly, Gun is a pleasure to play. It really is a multi-faceted trip back to the Old West. You can do almost anything that a cowboy would have done. We were very impressed with the options that the game play provided.
We have heard many claims that this game is too short. This is only a half truth. If you only do what the story forces you to do, then in fact this game will be over very quickly. However, if actually take the time to go through the tremendous number of unique side missions (which is almost a requirement of the harder difficulty settings) then you’ll find that the game is considerably longer and much more fulfilling.
In terms of graphics or audio we didn’t really think that Gun was terribly impressive. The graphics are standard, but crisp and fortunately, not dull and lifeless like more and more games are becoming.
Where this game really excels is the story and the game-play. We won’t ruin the story for you, but suffice it to say, that you are a cowboy looking to avenge a death, like all good cowboy stories. There are a lot of different aspects of cowboy life that a game like this needs to encompass. This game covers most, if not all, of them.
Once again, despite the violent nature of Gun, we really thought this was an excellent game. The 3rd person shooter market is too crowded with spy/army games and it was nice to get something different for a change. We definitely advise parents to think twice before buying this for their children (especially with Christmas approaching) but we completely recommend it for everyone else (as long as you’re not squeamish about a little gore).
