Your 2012 Golden Minecart Awards Winners Are…


The polls are closed and the results have been tabulated on another great year of gaming. You decided the winners and despite the potential for some obvious choices, you managed to surprise us in many of the categories.

Each of the winners is listed here along with some information about the votes. For the audio of the whole gala event along with acceptance speeches from many of the winners, please check out Episode 302 of the Podcast here.

Without further ado, here are your nominees with winners and voting percentages listed at the top.

Most Unique PSN Experience Nominees/Winners:
Journey – 68%

This appeared as though it would be a hotly contested category but the results clearly showed otherwise as Journey crushed all others.

Best PSN HD Remake Nominees/Winners:
Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath – 35%
Okami HD – 34%
Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee – 13%
Choplifter HD
Jet Set Radio HD
NIGHTS into dreams…
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD

Now here’s where things got crazy. The difference between first and second place ended up being a mere six votes. Remember that for next year everyone. Every vote counts.

Best PSN Game Overall Nominees/Winners:
Journey – 38%
The Walking Dead – 32%
Zen Pinball 2 – 11%
Joe Danger The Movie
Rainbow Moon
Sound Shapes
The Unfinished Swan

As expected, this was much closer, with The Walking Dead nearly eking out a victory. It wasn’t to be however as this year’s juggernaut, Journey, took top honors with its second win of the night.

Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational – 47%
MLB 12: The Show – 29%
FIFA 13 – 10%

A bit of a surprise if only in how handily Hot Shots Golf took the title here.

Best PS Vita Cross-Buy Game Nominees/Winners:

When Vikings Attack

Another runaway taking nearly half the votes. This really shouldn’t be a surprise considering how popular the Zen Pinball Tournaments were around here.


Best PS Vita Newcomer (New IP) Nominees/Winners:
Gravity Rush – 70%
Unit 13 – 16%
Escape Plan – 9%

Talk about domination. With a whopping 70% of the votes, you spoke loud and clear, making Gravity Rush the big winner. Now here’s hoping for a sequel.

Wow! There was never any doubt, but still, 81%?!? You people love your Persona, the clear cut choice here.

An incredibly tough category with many fantastic games released in the Vita’s first year of existence, it showed with the votes being split closely among the top three.

MLB 12: The Show – 52%
FIFA 13 – 17%

Not a huge surprise that MLB 12: The Show took top honors based on our community. This is now the third year in a row that the game has taken top honors in the Sports category. Will 2009 winner FIFA ever regain its crown? We’ll see next year…

PS3 Blast From The Past Nominees/Winners:
X-COM: Enemy Unknown – 40%
Twisted Metal – 24%
Max Payne 3 – 12%
Doom 3: BFG Edition

This one made me happy. X-COM is near and dear to me based on the original PC Game and the remake is just fantastic. It’s nice to see the community embrace a tough, turn based strategy game.

Ratchet & Clank HD Collection – 40%
Jak & Daxter HD Collection – 24%
Zone of the Enders HD Collection – 12%
Devil May Cry HD Collection

Silent Hill HD Collection

A couple of hits and misses this year but the Ratchet & Clank HD Collection was the definite favorite in the HD remake category.


Best PS3 Newcomer (New IP) Nominees/Winners:
Dishonored – 33%
Sleeping Dogs – 25%
Spec Ops: The Line – 13%
Binary Domain

Another tough category this year with so many great new IP’s being released. Dishonored clearly captured your imagination though as it pulled out the victory.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale – 58%
Persona 4 Arena – 12%
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 – 10%
Dead or Alive 5

A bit of a surprise in how handily this category was taken. Although hope and skepticism were in abundance leading up to its release, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale surprised everyone by being much more than a simple Smash Brothers clone, and the community obviously loved it.

Mass Effect 3 – 54%
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning – 28%
Tales of Graces f – 11% *Write-In Vote

Risen 2

The biggest surprise here was that one of the write-ins got enough votes to crack the top three. It’s exciting to see the community push for a game that wasn’t on the original list of nominees.

All right, so we know our community loves Need For Speed: Most Wanted, but to the point of utter domination over the rest of the nominees? Well done.

Borderlands 2 – 33%
Starhawk – 20%
Call of Duty: Black Ops II – 18%

A well deserved win for an excellent multiplayer experience. This was another vote that could have gone either way, but Borderlands 2 surged ahead in the voting and took the top spot with ease.

And the hat trick is complete. With the release of the Journey Collection on Blu-ray late in the year, the stage was set for the biggest surprise of the night. Even with all the games listed and votes being split, Journey was the clear cut favorite for PS3 Game of the Year.
