EA and Respawn Expand Relationship to Include New Star Wars Game

Can you imagine growing up with a thing as influential as Star Wars and then one day being offered the chance to work on something set in the Star Wars universe?

Such a mind trip is not something the folks at Respawn Entertainment need to imagine anymore as today, the independent studio behind Titanfall announced that their publishing deal with Electronics Arts has expanded to include just such a project.

Respawn Entertainment is making a Star Wars game.

“The opportunity to be a part of that is not something to take for granted. This is an opportunity that I, the team, and Respawn could not and would not pass up. This is the chance of a lifetime,” wrote Stig Asmussen, Game Director leading the Star Wars team at Respawn, this morning on the Respawn blog.

As you can imagine, details on the game itself are very limited at this point. All we know is that it will be a third-person action/adventure title set in the Star Wars Universe.

With this news, Respawn joins EA internal studios Visceral Games, DICE, Capital Games, BioWare, Motive and more working on Star Wars projects for the publisher which acquired the multi-year exclusive license to Star Wars games in 2013, and an arrangement that has thus far given us a DICE developed Star Wars: Battlefront (which Glenn reviewed here) on consoles and PC and numerous smaller titles developed for mobile devices.

“There’s never been a better time to be a Star Wars fan,” commented Patrick Söderlund, Executive Vice President of EA Studios. “The passion we’re seeing for Star Wars from gamers – whether they’ve been along for the ride since Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope, or were introduced to the magic of Star Wars with Star Wars: The Force Awakens – is fueling our development teams and our partners to create unique interactive extensions of this deep, meaningful universe. As a game maker, nothing is more exciting.”

Congrats, Respawn. We will be watching with great interest, and May the Fourth be will you.

A student of games, I play a bit of everything because I like to see what’s out there. Nothing better than first hand experience when it comes to knowing about games. Current game obsession: Anything MOBA (Paragon, Battleborn, Heroes of the Storm), except, ironically, the most popular ones, LoL and DOTA2.
