E3 2016: More Details on Battlefield 1

“With Battlefield 1 we’re looking to deliver the most dynamic shooter ever. We want to make sure that no battle is ever the same for the players, and with the introduction of Operations, we’re giving the fans variety for game play and creativity,” said Aleksander Grøndal, Senior Producer, DICE.

Detailed during E3 2016 at the EA Play press conference, Battlefield 1 will apparently meet this goal with “intuitive destruction and dynamic weather.” Unlike in previous Battlefield games in which the weather is constant, weather in multiplayer Battlefield 1 will change over the course of a match. Since conditions such as rain and fog have a major impact on what can be seen and heard, players will have to constantly adapt to the changing battle environment.

What “intuitive destruction” means is less clear. From the press release, “For even more gameplay possibilities, carve a path through walls and buildings, take down your enemies in creative ways, and leave your mark on the terrain. Through your actions, the pristine world around you will change into a battle-scarred landscape, changing the world forever.”

Previous Battlefield games since Bad Company 2 have also allowed players to carve through walls and buildings, so I’m not quite sure how this is different. We’ll let you know.

Operations are a new way to play multiplayer in Battlefield 1, featuring “a series of interconnected battles across multiple fronts,” with events in one battle effecting conditions in those that follow.

Finally, zeppelins, which were revealed as a player controlled vehicle at Battlefield 1’s reveal event, are just one of a class of vehicles DICE is calling Behemoths. They are the “largest fully player-controlled vehicles ever seen in Battlefield,” and beyond zeppelins, players will also be able to drive armored trains and battleships to turn the tides and, “dominate the battlefield across land, air, and sea.”

A Battlefield 1 open beta will be live later this summer. To get early access, players can sign up to become Battlefield Insider here, granting in-game rewards, exclusive content, and sneak peeks at news about Battlefield 1.

Battlefield 1 will launch on October 21st, 2016 worldwide on PS4, PC (Origin), and Xbox One. Players who pre-order the Early Enlister Deluxe Edition can begin playing on October 18. Check out the trailer.

A student of games, I play a bit of everything because I like to see what’s out there. Nothing better than first hand experience when it comes to knowing about games. Current game obsession: Anything MOBA (Paragon, Battleborn, Heroes of the Storm), except, ironically, the most popular ones, LoL and DOTA2.
