E3 2016: Bethesda Media Briefing Impressions

Bethesda’s E3 2016 show began with a trailer from the newly announced Quake Champions. It is a PC exclusive for now, which is a shame because it looked great. Hopefully we will get a PS4 version of this arena shooter at some point.

Pete Hines then took to the stage to remind us of the successful year that Bethesda had with Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 4, and Doom. The former series was then reintroduces, in Elder Scrolls Legends, with an opening cinematic shown.

The game has a campaign, with solo and versus play. They are allowing more people in the closed beta as of this week, plus they announced the game will be released on mobile and tablets later this year. Legends looks interesting and I will definitely be trying it on launch.

Todd Howard thanked fans of Fallout 4, before showing the audience where the franchise is heading next. Updates to Fallout 4 allow you to build your own Vault and contraptions, while a teaser trailer for Fallout 4’s next DLC was shown – Nuka World. Also given some love was Fallout Shelter, which is coming to PC and will include quests.

Howard went on to confirm some news which has been much-rumored, Skyrim Remastered. The graphics have been overhauled, along with the depth of field and the lighting engine. Gamers will be able to play mods on consoles as well. Last but not least, the release date was revealed as October 28, 2016. I will definitely be taking another swing at this amazing world. The trailer showcased ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots and it is beautiful.

Next up was Arcane Studios, with a game I am very excited for – a reboot of Prey. This title came out of nowhere and looks fantastic. You are being hunted by aliens on a captured space station, and the set up seems to be pretty exciting. The game will launch next year for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. While not a lot was shown, the premise of the trailer was unique and I can’t wait to see more.

The excellent DOOM from id Software made an appearance next. While not a lot was said, we will be getting free updates to the Snap Map. The first paid DLC was unveiled as Unto The Evil, which includes three new maps, one demon and much more. But the biggest news for DOOM was that the first level will be playable for free this week. We recommend you try it out – DOOM is a fantastic game.

A crowd favorite in Elder Scrolls Online returned to the stage, celebrating its first anniversary. Elder Scrolls Online has 7 million players and will go live June 23 in Japan. Meanwhile, next week sees the arrival of The Dark Brotherhood DLC.

While I have no interest in the game, the trailer made me want to climb in. It was dark and moody, showing some great gameplay and story elements. There will also be no content barriers, meaning everyone can join with whomever and go wherever they want, which makes jumping into the game easier.

The next section was a great surprise – virtual reality. The two titles coming out for VR will be Fallout 4 and DOOM. While only the HTC Vive was announced for support, we’d love it to transition to PlayStation VR at some stage.

Dishonored 2 logo

The last game on the stage was Dishonored 2 and it is arguably shaping up to be the game of the year. There is a lot of promise to this title, and its latest showing did not disappoint. We were led through a tour of the new city, Karnaka, which was beautiful in a lived-in way. You could just see the history and life in the parts of the city, which the team is trying to nail with this sequel.

The game is using the Void engine and one thing that popped out was the lighting effects, which are so much better this time around. You will be able to play as either Corvo Attano or Emily Caufield and each character has their own viewpoint to the story , as well as their own powers and move-sets. The demo showed a great sense of verticality to the city as there is more than one way to get to each location.

As the night wound down, Bethesda spotlighted the Collector’s Edition of Dishonored 2, which looked fantastic and comes with items like Corvo’s mask and Emily’s ring. Plus, pre-orders of the game will receive a copy of the Definitive Edition of the first game, which is a great deal and a must-play.

Bethesda brought a nice array of games this year and some great surprises. My favorite announcement has to be Prey and I look forward to learning more about that title. From PC-only to mobile games, plus updates to Fallout 4 and DOOM, Bethesda had a great line-up.
